We have a self hosted Gitlab server at work for closed source projects that works really well. I installed and am the administrator of it. I prefer it over GitHub, but I use GitHub for my personal projects, since that is what everyone else is using.

I signed up for GitHub to work on a side project with a couple other college devs, but the project never went anywhere (I think we had a total of maybe 300 lines of Java, mostly from a template).
A few years later as I get more into programming, I started to actually use GitHub and didn't even know there were alternatives.
At this point, I haven't tried any of the alternatives because GitHub is working just fine for me (especially after the recent free private repos update). I'm not opposed to changing to/trying another platform, I just don't have any incentive to at this time.

My experience with GitHub has been amazing so far. I've tried Bitbucket but I got annoyed at the poor performances they offer to free plans. Although I understand Bitbucket's choice (after all I wasn't paying at all for my repos!), I chose GitHub when I set up my first start up.
I've barely worked with GitLab (hence why I'm also interested in people's opinions on it), but what I understand of it is that it's meant to handle everything about your web project: from managing tasks to storing code and deploying the app.
