I gave my free AI website builder internet access

openconstructor is a free, open-source AI interface builder that runs in the browser. You describe a page, it builds it on a canvas, and you export HTML, React, Vue, Svelte or even Roblox UI. This week the AI learned to look things up on the internet.

The AI can now browse the web

Ask "when did Vite 6 come out?" or "make a landing page in the style of https://linear.app", and the model no longer has to guess.

There was no fancy tool-calling API to lean on: the free models behind the builder are small, and half of them don't support tools reliably. So it's done in the same one-line JSON protocol the builder already uses:

{"action":"search","query":"vite 6 release date"}
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

If the model needs fresh facts, it answers with just that line. The editor sees it, calls /api/web on my Cloudflare Worker, and asks again with the results attached.

The Worker:

  • searches DuckDuckGo's HTML endpoint and falls back to the Wikipedia API if that returns nothing;
  • reads the text of the top two results (scripts, nav and footers stripped, 2,500 characters each);
  • caches everything for an hour;
  • refuses private and local addresses.

Links in your message are read up front: paste a site and the AI opens it before it starts writing.

The model only searches when it needs facts that change: news, prices, a real company, product or person, library docs. For made-up content like landing page copy or design ideas, it doesn't bother.

A search doesn't eat your free tries

Anonymous visitors get 3 free generations a day, and "search + answer" is two model calls. So every call from one message carries the same X-OC-Turn id, and the Worker counts it once (up to 4 calls per id, expiring in 10 minutes). One message = one try, however much digging the AI does.

A thinking indicator you can watch

While the AI works, you now see a thin timeline instead of a big box:

  • grey dots for steps in progress and green dots for finished ones;
  • a small 8-bit spark made of blocks that grows and shrinks;
  • a header word that retypes itself every couple of seconds: thinking → vibing → coding → sketching → tinkering…

When it goes online, the header types out exploring internet, and the timeline shows the exact query it's searching for. Waiting feels much shorter when something honest is happening on screen.

Try it without an account at openconstructor.pw: ask something that needs the internet and watch it go exploring.

The whole project is free and open source. If you like it, a ⭐ on GitHub helps a lot: it's how other people find the project, and it keeps me shipping. Thanks!
