45 Years of the IBM PC: How the Model F Keyboard Made a Computer Iconic

August 12, 1981: The Day the PC Was Born

45 years ago today, on August 12, 1981, IBM launched the 5150 Personal Computer. It wasn't the first computer to be called "personal" — that distinction belongs to earlier machines like the Xerox Alto and the Apple II. But the IBM PC was the machine that defined what most people today think a PC is, and it kickstarted a series of events that defined the computing industry for the next four decades.

The 5150 wasn't revolutionary in the way the Macintosh would be three years later. It was a competent, business-oriented machine with an open architecture that invited cloning. The IBM-compatible "clone" market is what ultimately sustained the ecosystem's prominence — companies like Compaq, Dell, and HP built IBM-compatible machines that ran the same software, creating the standard that would dominate computing for decades.

But there's an often-overlooked part of the IBM PC's success story: its keyboard.

The Model F/XT: A Keyboard Worth Celebrating

The keyboard that shipped with the IBM PC was the Model F/XT. It was a buckling-spring keyboard — a design where each key has a spring that buckles at a specific point during the keypress, providing both tactile feedback and an audible click. The buckling spring mechanism was originally developed for IBM's Selectric typewriters and was adapted for computer keyboards.

The Model F/XT was not a perfect keyboard. Its layout was idiosyncratic — it had function keys on the left side rather than the top, and the Ctrl key was where Caps Lock is on modern keyboards (a design choice that many power users still prefer). But it was well-built, reliable, and provided a typing experience that modern keyboards struggle to match.

The buckling spring mechanism gives the Model F a distinctive feel. The keys have a crisp, tactile break point that lets you know exactly when the key has actuated, without bottoming out. The sound is distinctive — a loud, mechanical click that office workers of the 1980s would have recognized instantly. Modern mechanical keyboard enthusiasts still seek out Model F keyboards, and remanufactured versions are sold today at premium prices.

Before the PC: IBM's Path to Personal Computing

IBM didn't start with the PC. Before 1981, IBM released several products that were adjacent to a personal computer:

The SCAMP prototype: IBM's Special Computer, APL Machine Portable was demonstrated in 1973. It was a prototype that showed IBM was thinking about personal computing years before the market was ready.

The 5100 Portable Computer (1975): A 50-pound "portable" computer that ran APL and BASIC. It was expensive ($9,000-$20,000 in 1975 dollars) and aimed at engineers and scientists, not the mass market.

The 5120 Computing System (1980): A follow-up to the 5100, still aimed at the professional market.

The System 9000: A laboratory instrument computer that showed IBM's interest in smaller, specialized systems.

None of these products became consumer hits. They were too expensive, too specialized, or too late. But they gave IBM experience with small-form-factor computing that would prove valuable when the PC project began.

The Datamaster: The PC's Direct Ancestor

The IBM System/23 Datamaster, released in 1981 just before the PC, was the most direct ancestor. It was an all-in-one word processing system with a built-in display and keyboard. The Datamaster used an Intel 8085 processor and ran BASIC — IBM's experience with the Datamaster directly informed the PC's design.

The Datamaster's keyboard design, in particular, was carried over to the PC. The Model F buckling-spring mechanism was already in use on the Datamaster, and IBM's keyboard division had refined the design to a high degree. When the PC project needed a keyboard, the infrastructure and expertise were already in place.

The Open Architecture Decision

The IBM PC's open architecture was arguably the most consequential business decision in computing history. IBM published the technical reference manuals, including full schematics and BIOS source code. This openness was intended to encourage third-party development — and it did, spectacularly, but it also enabled competitors to build compatible machines.

Compaq's portable IBM-compatible computer, released in 1982, was the first successful clone. By the late 1980s, IBM-compatible machines from dozens of manufacturers had created a standardized platform that software developers could target with confidence. This standardization is what made the PC the dominant computing platform for three decades.

The irony is that IBM's openness, which enabled the PC's success, also eventually marginalized IBM itself. By the 1990s, IBM was just one of many PC manufacturers, and the company eventually sold its PC business to Lenovo in 2005.

The Keyboard Legacy

The Model F was followed by the Model M in 1985, which used a similar buckling-spring mechanism but with a more modern layout. The Model M is arguably even more famous than the Model F — it's the keyboard that most people think of when they hear "IBM keyboard." The Model M's layout (with function keys across the top and a dedicated arrow key cluster) became the standard for PC keyboards.

But the Model F was the original. It was the keyboard that came with the machine that started it all. Its buckling-spring design, while not unique to IBM, was perfected by IBM's keyboard division and became a standard for typing quality that has never been surpassed.

Today, custom keyboard builders sell new Model F reproductions for $200-$400. Enthusiasts modify original Model Fs with USB controllers. The demand for the Model F's typing feel, 45 years after its introduction, speaks to the quality of its design.

45 Years Later

The IBM PC's legacy is everywhere. The x86 architecture that the PC introduced (via the Intel 8088) still runs most of the world's desktop and laptop computers. The concept of an open, standardized hardware platform that anyone can build for — that's the PC's gift to computing.

But let's spare a thought for the keyboard. In an era of membrane keyboards, chiclet keys, and touchscreens, the Model F/XT reminds us that hardware design matters. A well-designed keyboard can outlast its computer by decades, provide a better typing experience than anything modern, and maintain a community of enthusiasts 45 years after its introduction.
