Django now has a built-in Tasks framework, which raises a fair question for new and existing projects: do you still need Celery for background work such as sending email, generating reports, or calling slow third-party APIs?

The built-in Tasks framework gives you a standard way to define background tasks in Django itself, with a simple mental model and far less setup than a separate system. For many projects that is enough: you define the task, enqueue it, and let a worker run it, without adding and operating extra infrastructure on day one.

Celery still wins in several areas. It has a much larger ecosystem, mature support for different brokers, and well-established tooling for monitoring, retries, scheduling, and complex workflows. If you need those specific features, or you are already running Celery successfully at scale, there is little reason to rip it out.

A practical decision rule: small and medium projects should start with Django Tasks and keep the architecture simple. Reach for Celery when you grow to a scale that needs its ecosystem, brokers, monitoring, or a particular feature that Tasks does not provide.
