Final Year CS Student Exploring Innovative FYP Ideas

Hello everyone!

I'm new to the developer community and truly excited to be a part of it. I’ve joined this space not only to enhance my own skills but also to support and learn from fellow developers.

I’m currently in my final year of BS Computer Science, and I’m looking for guidance, ideas, or suggestions for my Final Year Project (FYP). I want to work on something meaningful, impactful, and ideally aligned with current industry trends or technologies.

If you have any tips, project ideas, or advice from your own experience, I’d really appreciate it. Looking forward to learning, contributing, and growing with this amazing community.

Thank you!

Hey - welcome to the group! Happy to have you on board. 😀

To introduce myself, I’m Ashley, and I actually joined this group pretty recently too. There’s a great community here - people are always willing to lend a hand. Congrats on your first official post! Putting yourself out there, especially right away in a new space, is a bigger deal than most people realize. Not everyone does it - so seriously, kudos!

I graduated about 10 years ago, so here are a couple thoughts based on my experience (plus a sprinkle of the “things I wish someone had told me then”):

Love your project

It doesn’t have to be magnificent, flashy, or award-winning, but it does need to excite you. The best projects are the ones where you keep telling yourself you’ll be fine with “just 10 more minutes” (even when you know you’ve got an 8 AM class and should have stopped an hour ago). Those are the times you get so focused, you lose all sense of time, space, and let’s be honest - sometimes even forget about the basics, like food!

Please don’t really do that (although, let’s be real, most of us have!), but that’s the kind of passion you want to aim for 🤣

Find inspiration anywhere

Sometimes the best ideas come from everyday life:

  • Do you, a family member, or friend have trouble with something that could be fixed with a little code?
  • Is there a new technology or framework you’ve been itching to try?
    • One of the most memorable college projects I saw was in a “tinkerer” elective (can’t remember the real name). A classmate built the classic Snake game using a giant 3D cube of LEDs and an Atari-style joystick. Super impressive, but also just really fun!
  • Have you ever seen something and thought it was cool, but would be really great if it just did XYZ?
    • True story: I once got myself into a situation by copying someone else’s project, just to play around and see what I could make it do. I almost deleted my changes, but decided to send it back to them first - just in case there was anything useful. Turns out I’d accidentally made a huge improvement, and now it’s an official part of the project! 😆

🌱 The point is you don’t need to change the world with your project. Sometimes solving a small problem for yourself is just as impressive - and often way more fun!

Prototype first

I’m sure FYPs look different everywhere, but the last thing you want is to commit to something, do all the research, and then start building only to realize half your ideas don’t work - or even worse, everything works, but you just don’t enjoy it.

🛠️ Take a few hours to build a super simple proof-of-concept. Fake the features, use AI for shortcuts, whatever helps. Test the waters before you’re committed. Give yourself permission to pivot early if it’s not clicking. Future-you will thank you!

Anyway, hope this helps! Feel free to bounce ideas around here - there’s always someone happy to brainstorm.
