I Built an AI Tool for UK Tradespeople. Here's What I Learned.

I Built an AI Tool for UK Tradespeople. Here's What I Learned.

2.5 million self-employed tradespeople in the UK. Almost none of them have a proper system for quoting and invoicing. Most do it via text message, handwritten notes, or just verbally.

That's the problem HomiWorks is solving.

The Problem

When a homeowner needs a tradesperson, they contact several. Whoever sends a clear, professional quote first wins the job — most of the time regardless of price.

Most tradespeople lose that race. Not because they're slow workers, but because writing up a quote at the end of a long day on site is genuinely painful. So they delay, or skip it entirely.

Beyond quoting, late payment is chronic in the trades industry. Invoices go out late, reminders never get sent, and chasing money is awkward enough that most tradespeople just absorb the loss.

What We Built

HomiWorks lets a tradesperson go from job site to sent quote in under 60 seconds — from their phone. The AI handles the line items. They review, adjust, and send.

When the job's done, invoices go out automatically. So do payment reminders at 7 and 14 days — no manual chasing required.

It's built specifically for UK tradespeople: GBP pricing, UK VAT handling, and delivery via email with digital signatures.

What I've Learned Building for a Non-Tech Audience

  • Simplicity is everything.** If a feature requires explanation, it won't get used. Every screen has to work for someone who is tired, on site, and has no patience for complexity.

  • Distribution is harder than building.** The product works. Getting it in front of the right people — plumbers, electricians, builders — is the real challenge. They're not on Product Hunt. They're on Facebook groups, YouTube, and word of mouth.

  • The niche is an advantage.** Building for a specific, underserved audience means less competition and much clearer product decisions. Every feature either helps a tradesperson quote faster or get paid sooner — or it doesn't ship.

Currently in early access. If you're building for non-technical audiences or in the SME space, happy to compare notes in the comments.
