Introduction
What if I told you that you don’t have to buy your groceries, do the laundry, or even cook meals by yourself anymore? Imagine a future where AI frees humans from all forms of exhausting work, giving us back the time and energy for the things we love. From checker playing-machines to self-driving cars, the science fiction of artificial intelligence is quickly becoming a reality. Is this a progress to be celebrated, or a future to fear? This article is just the beginning of a larger conversation about the exciting possibilities and potential pitfalls of AI.
What is Artificial Intelligence?
Before we dive into the pros and cons of AI, let's take a step back and answer the fundamental question, what exactly is it? Imagine a machine that can learn, adapt, and even make decisions on its own. Well, that's the basic idea behind artificial intelligence. Without further ado, allow us to introduce the three (3) types of Artificial Intelligence based on its different capabilities; these are the Narrow AI, General AI, and Super AI.
Narrow AI (Weak AI) - it only focuses on one narrow task and cannot perform beyond its limitations (Biswal, 2023). e.g., chatGPT, google translate, self-driving cars.
General AI (Strong AI) - it can understand and learn any intellectual task that a human being can (Biswal, 2023). This AI has not been achieved and researchers are still striving for it.
Super AI - it surpasses human intelligence and can perform any task better than a human. It evokes emotions, needs, beliefs, and desires of its own (Biswal, 2023). Though, this AI still remains as a concept.
Now that we have already grasped a brief concept of what artificial Intelligence is . Then, let us dwell into its advantages.
Efficiency and Productivity
Remember that sci-fi movie where robots did all the chores and humans just chilled? AI might just give us that chance. It is transforming not just systems but our everyday lives, making the future a reality you can experience today.
Imagine ditching boring tasks like data entry or scheduling meetings. AI bots can handle that while you focus on creative problem solving and strategic thinking. This is already happening. In factories, AI-powered robots assemble products with precision and speed.
Advancement in Various Field
AI is not just changing, it's revolutionizing the way we work in many fields, bringing significant advantages in a variety of ways. The healthcare industry is witnessing a significant transformation, thanks to these super-smart computers. This advancement unlocks a wealth of advantages (faster diagnoses and personalized treatment plans).
AI analyzes large datasets from clinical trials and medical literature, allowing researchers to identify new treatment approaches and disease biomarkers. Drug discovery is being revolutionized with algorithms that predict the biological properties of molecules, leading to faster and more cost-effective development of new drugs (BMC Medical Education, 2023).
Enhanced Entertainment and Creativity
Anyone with a passion to share can become a content creator, AI makes content creation intuitive and easy even for beginners. Imagine someone using AI to create a basic animation even if they lack professional animation software. E.g., Kaiber (Kaiber), Neural Frames (neural frames | AI animation generator).
Creativity requires imagination. Artificial intelligence is there as a brainstorming buddy. AI fuels your creativity with data driven suggestions for ideas, characters and plot twists for aspiring writers.
While artificial intelligence (AI) continues to become our daily companion in this modern world, it does not exceptionally mean that it is immune to such drawbacks. Thus, the widespread adoption on AI still negatively impacts society, particularly in terms of the traditional industry landscapes.
Job Displacement
Past automation like the Industrial Revolution caused job losses, raising concerns about AI's future impact. Hence, the immediate hurdle of unemployment might adversely cause disruption to financial stability and livelihood.
AI technologies are known to excel in performing repetitive tasks more efficiently than humans, which reduces the need for human involvement (Clark, 2023).
Automated and programmable robots have driven the industrial revolution. From manual labor to automation marvels, robots rewrite the rules of manufacturing.
Safety and Security Risk
AI is like a data vacuum cleaner, needing tons of info to work its magic. That, however, worries the users about data privacy and the potential exploitation of their personal information basically known as identity theft., e.g., facial recognition, scanning of IDs in verification.
Many AI systems, particularly high-performing AI models can feel like solving a puzzle with hidden pieces. While we see their results, their internal logic remains unclear.
Lack of Creativity
Current AI models excel at processing information, but struggle to replicate the variation of human expression, which often stem from personal experiences, emotions, and intuition. A significant and controversial breakthrough in AI generated music revolves around its remarkable ability to emulate popular artists.
Even if AI is able to flawlessly recreate the elements of a popular song, it might struggle to capture the very essence, the soul stirring emotion that breathes life into the music.
We can simply think of our AI technology as a dependable home appliance. It functions similarly to our trusty home blender, but sometimes there are really unavoidable instances that may take place such as problems with the ingredients getting stuck, safety concerns, and the need for new recipes.
Moreover, resolving these issues goes beyond merely fixing a defect; it's more like tweaking the blender's settings. In the same way that we modify the blender in order to make food enjoyable and trouble-free, let's also ensure that our AI system functions well in a balanced manner.
