Agents are brilliant in demos and brittle in real web software. Here's why — five failure modes every agent builder runs into:
Misreading buttons and labels. The agent sees a row of similar-looking rectangles and guesses. "Delete" becomes "Download." Confirmation becomes cancellation.
Getting trapped in modals and popups. A cookie banner, a newsletter prompt, an upsell modal — and the whole workflow stalls behind a dialog the agent can't figure out how to dismiss.
Failing on logins and CAPTCHAs. Session expiry, MFA prompts, bot detection — each one is a wall the agent was never built to climb, and there's no graceful fallback.
Hallucinating data from truncated tables. It reads the first ten rows, never notices the pagination, and confidently reports a partial table as the full picture.
Breaking on infinite scroll and pagination. New content loads, the layout shifts, element references go stale — and the agent ends up clicking on ghosts.
