Building More Reliable AI Applications with Python and Structured Workflows
AI applications are becoming more capable, but generating an answer is only one part of building a reliable system. Developers also need to think about validation, decision-making, error handling, and how different components work together.
One approach is to combine LLMs with structured logic rather than relying on an LLM for every decision.
For example:
- Structured decision-making: Use clear rules when a task has predictable conditions.
- Confidence-based routing: Choose the next step based on the confidence or characteristics of a result.
- Python workflows: Connect APIs, models, and application logic into a maintainable process.
- AI agents: Define boundaries and validate outputs before taking consequential actions.
I'm exploring these concepts through the JEV Application Engineering Masterclass, which covers Python-based application engineering, classifiers, model routing, and AI agent workflows.
I'd love to hear from other developers:
- When do you prefer deterministic logic over an LLM call?
- How do you validate outputs in multi-step AI workflows?
- What has helped you make AI agents more reliable in real applications?
