Inspiration
We saw a gap between skilled informal workers and customers who need reliable services. Many workers face limited digital access, high commissions, and difficulty reaching new customers, while customers often struggle to find trustworthy skilled workers. We wanted to build a platform that makes this connection more accessible, transparent, and worker-friendly.
What it does
SAHAYA connects customers with verified cooperative workers such as electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and other skilled service providers. Customers can describe their requirements naturally, and Gemma 4 helps understand the request and extract important details such as the required service, problem type, and urgency. The system then uses these details along with worker skills, location, availability, and verification to identify suitable workers. SAHAYA also incorporates voice/IVR accessibility to support workers with limited smartphone access.
How we built it
SAHAYA uses a modular architecture consisting of a customer interface, worker interface, backend services, database, AI processing layer, and worker-matching system. Gemma 4 is used for natural-language understanding and converts customer requests into structured service information. The backend then processes the request and matches it with suitable workers based on relevant attributes such as skill, location, availability, and verification.
Challenges
One of our main challenges was designing the system so that AI genuinely contributes to the workflow rather than functioning as a standalone chatbot. We also had to consider the digital-access gap faced by informal workers and design the platform so that it can eventually support users through voice-based interaction as well as conventional applications.
Accomplishments
We built a working prototype demonstrating the core SAHAYA workflow from customer service requests to AI-based request understanding and worker matching. We also integrated Gemma 4 as an open AI component and designed the platform around verified cooperative workers rather than an unrestricted marketplace.
What's next
We plan to expand SAHAYA with multilingual voice interaction, a complete IVR system, AI-based demand forecasting, digital payments, insurance integration, welfare services, and stronger federation-based worker verification. The platform can eventually be extended to different cities and cooperative worker networks.
