The CAD Manager's 10-Point Disaster Recovery Checklist: Corrupt DWG Recovery Protocols

The CAD Manager's 10-Point Disaster Recovery Checklist: Corrupt DWG Recovery Protocols

Every engineering office eventually faces the nightmare scenario: a lead designer double-clicks a mission-critical master drawing and is greeted with:

"Drawing file is not valid" or "Internal Error: GDI handle exhaustion".

Before calling for an emergency backup restore, CAD administrators can follow this structured 10-point disaster recovery protocol to salvage drawing databases.

The 10-Step Recovery Workflow

  1. Check Binary Header Signature: Open the file in a hex editor or browser-based inspector. Verify that the first 6 bytes match valid magic strings (AC1032, AC1027, AC1024). If the header reads 00 00 00 00, the file suffered zero-byte network truncation.
  2. Execute RECOVER: Use the RECOVER command rather than standard OPEN. This forces the graphics engine to rebuild the entity header index from scratch.
  3. Execute RECOVERALL: If the file relies on multiple nested external references, run RECOVERALL to audit the host drawing and all associated Xref dependencies in a single pass.
  4. Insert into Empty Template: Open an empty default acad.dwt drawing, execute INSERT, select the corrupted file, and explode it at coordinate (0,0,0). This often bypasses corrupted layout dictionary structures.
  5. Partial Open: In the File Open dialog, choose Partial Open. Load only geometric layers (e.g., walls, steel) while skipping corrupted annotations or dynamic block definitions.
  6. Purge Regapps: Run -PURGE -> Regapps -> *. Eradicate bloated registered application signatures that degrade drawing performance.
  7. Audit Entity Pointers: Run AUDIT with fix errors set to Y.
  8. Export Clean Geometry via WBLOCK: Type WBLOCK, select entire drawing entities, and export to a fresh DWG container to discard orphaned symbol tables.
  9. Inspect Auto-Save Cache: Navigate to %TEMP% and check for recent .sv$ or .ac$ autosave snapshots. Rename the extension to .dwg.
  10. Re-verify Drawing Header: Test the restored file with zero-cloud client tools.
