For the past 2.5 years, I've been building Work-Break—an AI-powered productivity platform that helps individuals and teams manage work breaks, tasks, meetings, leave requests, and Google Calendar sync.
Like many side projects, it started with a simple goal: build a tool that I would actually enjoy using.
Over time, it grew into a much larger project than I had imagined.
The Reality of Building Alone
As a solo developer, I was responsible for everything:
Designing the UI
Building the frontend
Developing the backend
Setting up cloud infrastructure
Mobile app development
Bug fixes
Feature requests
Documentation
Marketing
Building the product was challenging, but maintaining and growing it has been an even bigger challenge.
Eventually, I realised that if I wanted Work-Break to become something bigger than a personal project, it couldn't depend on just one developer.
Why Open Source?
I didn't open-source Work-Break because I was finished with it.
I open-sourced it because I want more people to help shape its future.
Since Work-Break manages productivity data—including tasks, meetings, leave requests, and calendar events—I also wanted users to have complete transparency. Anyone can inspect the code, understand how it works, suggest improvements, or self-host it if they prefer.
For me, open source is about more than publishing code. It's about building trust and creating something that can continue to grow with the community.

What's Next?
There are plenty of features I'd love to add in the future, including integrations with Slack, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Teams, and other workplace tools.
Instead of trying to build everything alone, I'd rather build them with the community.
My hope is that Work-Break becomes one of those open-source projects that people genuinely enjoy using and contributing to—a platform that remains free for individuals, students, startups, and small teams.
