🌐 MAC Address: The Permanent Fingerprint of Your Device
How do network devices uniquely identify each other on a local network, even when IP addresses change? Through a MAC Address.
Here are the key points:
🔹 1. What is a MAC Address?
Media Access Control Address: A unique, physical hardware address burned into every Network Interface Card (NIC) by the manufacturer at the factory. It is completely permanent and cannot be changed.
🔹 2. Structure & Format
48-Bit Address: Written in hexadecimal format, using colons (:) or hyphens (-), e.g., A1:B2:C3:D4:E5:F6.
Two Halves:
OUI (First half): Identifies the manufacturer of the network hardware.
Device Specific (Second half): A unique serial number assigned to that specific card.
🔹 3. IP Address vs. MAC Address
IP Address: Like a temporary mailing address that changes depending on where you connect to the network.
MAC Address: Like a permanent physical fingerprint or ID that stays with the hardware forever no matter where you go.
🚀 Think of an IP address like a shipping destination address on an envelope, while the MAC address is like the recipient's personal identity card inside the house!
👇 Have you ever looked up your computer or phone's physical MAC address in your system settings? Let me know!
