Every job posting gets hundreds of applications. Before a human ever sees your resume, an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) scores it against keywords, structure, and formatting — and rejects up to 75% of candidates automatically.
Good news: the machine is predictable. It wants specific sections, in a specific order, in a format it can parse. Below is a complete, copy-paste-ready ATS resume template — free, no email required — plus the rules that make it pass.

Why Each Section Earns Its Place
Professional Summary (2-3 sentences): Recruiters spend 6-8 seconds on the first scan. Lead with years of experience + key skills + the value you bring. Mirror 2-3 exact keywords from the job posting — the ATS is literally scoring you on keyword matches.
Core Competencies (10 skills): A machine-readable keyword bank. Pull terms directly from the job description. If the posting says "stakeholder management" and your resume says "working with stakeholders", you just lost a keyword match — write it the way the posting writes it.
Professional Experience (metrics in every bullet): "Increased organic traffic by 200%" beats "responsible for SEO". The ATS doesn't score this — the human who sees the top 25% does. Numbers are the difference.
Education + Certifications + Technical Skills: Standard sections the parser expects to find in standard places. Put them in this order, and don't get creative with headers — "Where I've Worked" is invisible to the machine; "PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE" is not.
The Five Rules That Make Any Resume ATS-Proof
- One column only. Multi-column layouts confuse parsers — half your content ends up in the wrong field or dropped entirely.
- Standard fonts, no graphics. Tables, text boxes, icons, and logos are where parsing goes to die.
- Reverse chronological order. Most recent job first, always. It's what the ATS and the recruiter both expect.
- Submit .docx unless the posting says PDF. .docx parsing is more reliable across systems.
- Match keywords exactly. The system compares your words to the posting's words. Synonyms are misses.
