In a world saturated with likes, comments, and constant updates,it’s easy to feel connected. But this sense of connection is often more illusion than reality. Social media creates a feedback loop of interaction that mimics intimacy, without the emotional depth of real relationships. This phenomenon, known as “ambient intimacy,” tricks our brains into feeling socially fulfilled—while often deepening feelings of loneliness.
Psychologically, these platforms exploit our social needs by delivering just enough stimulation to keep us engaged, yet rarely providing the kind of meaningful interaction that nourishes mental health. As users, we must distinguish between connection and contact, and learn to prioritize presence over performance in our digital lives.
