Why Japanese Sales Reps Are Slow to Use AI (And How to Change That)

Japan has some of the most disciplined and dedicated sales teams in the world. Yet AI adoption in sales is slower here than almost anywhere else.

Here is why — and what to do about it.

The Barriers

1. The output does not sound like you

Japanese business communication has nuance — keigo, relationship context, industry-specific phrasing. Generic ChatGPT output often feels off.

Fix: Give it context. Instead of 'Write a follow-up email,' say 'Write a follow-up email in a professional Japanese business style for a prospect I have met twice. We have a formal relationship but there is some rapport.'

2. Fear of looking lazy

Some reps worry that using AI means they are cutting corners. Their manager might not approve.

Fix: Frame it as preparation quality, not speed. 'I use AI to make sure my proposals are stronger, not to skip steps.'

3. They do not know where to start

ChatGPT is a blank page. Without prompts, it is hard to get useful output.

Fix: Start with one use case. I started with ROI calculations in proposals. Just that one change saved me 15 minutes per proposal.

Where AI Adds the Most Value in Sales

Based on my own use:

  1. Proposal ROI sections — turning numbers into narratives
  2. Objection preparation — practicing responses before calls
  3. Follow-up emails — getting the first draft done fast
  4. Research before meetings — summarizing what matters about a prospect
  5. Debriefing after losses — understanding what went wrong

What AI Will Not Replace

  • The trust you build in person
  • Reading the room in a meeting
  • Knowing when to push and when to wait
  • The relationships that took years to build

AI is a tool. You are still the salesperson.

A Simple Starting Point

Next time you have to write a follow-up email, open ChatGPT first.

Give it context: who you met, what you discussed, what the next step is.

Then edit the output.

That is it. Start there.
