Why I Tried This
Sales role-play with managers is awkward, infrequent, and the feedback is often vague.
One day I asked myself: What if I use ChatGPT as my role-play partner?
The results were surprisingly effective. Here's exactly how I do it.
The Setup Prompt
You are playing the role of my sales prospect — a 50-year-old CEO of a 30-person manufacturing company.
Context:
- The company's sales have been flat for 3 years
- They're cautious about new investments, but data-driven
- Natural objections to include: "too expensive", "comparing with competitors", "need to think about it"
Respond realistically to my sales pitch.
After the role-play ends, give me feedback on my approach.
What Changed
Before ChatGPT role-play:
- Practiced 1–2 times/month with manager
- Feedback was abstract ("be more confident")
- Same type of prospect every time
After ChatGPT role-play:
- 5–10 minutes of practice daily, before every call
- Specific, actionable feedback
- Can switch between different prospect types freely
The biggest change? I stopped being surprised by objections.
When "that's too expensive" comes up in a real call, I've already handled it 20 times in practice.
Pre-Call Prep (Bonus Use Case)
The morning of an important call:
My prospect today is [Name] at [Company], a mid-size software firm.
Known challenges: [X, Y, Z]
If they say "we don't need this right now", give me 5 comeback responses.
Done in 5 minutes. Complete objection prep before the call starts.
Takeaway
| Before | After ChatGPT |
|---|---|
| Role-play 1–2x/month | Daily 5–10 min practice |
| Vague feedback | Specific, actionable |
| One prospect type | Unlimited variations |
| 30 min prep | Under 10 min |
ChatGPT won't replace real sales experience.
But it's the closest thing to infinite, low-cost practice that exists today.
If you're not using it for role-play yet, try it before your next call.
