The forest grows darker as Gord and Rothütle push deeper, the trees closing in like ancient sentinels. Rothütle checks every trunk and shadow nervously.
"So, how did my shadow turn against me?" he asks, voice low.
"It was a manifestation of the prisoner I talked about," Gord explains. "The old magic is failing."
"You should perhaps try to use some new magic then," Rothütle suggests.
But then Gord stops abruptly as they reach a rickety wooden bridge spanning a deep gorge. The structure looks ancient, with missing planks and frayed ropes.
"Crossing this bridge is risky," Gord warns.
Rothütle hesitates. "I'm not sure if I want to cross it or meet another one of your friends."
Gord inspects the bridge carefully. "We have no choice. We need to get to the other side."
As they step onto the bridge, it creaks ominously under their weight. Halfway across, a plank snaps, and Rothütle stumbles, grabbing the ropes for support.
Tip of the day: Legacy systems can fail catastrophically under load. Keep your infrastructure updated and modernized to avoid sudden breakdowns.
Security Tip #10 — Legacy Systems Fail Under Load
Old, unmaintained components behave like the collapsing bridge:
they don't break slowly — they break suddenly, and only when you depend on them most.
There is an old saying in software engineering:
"If it works, don't touch it."
That's a dangerous mindset in security, as legacy systems often harbor unpatched vulnerabilities and can contain well-known CVEs. Those systems should be maintained at least in the following ways:
- Regularly audit legacy systems for vulnerabilities and performance issues.
- Plan and execute modernization strategies to replace or upgrade outdated components.
- Rebuild the Docker images and update dependencies frequently, when possible.
- If the system is not maintainable, try to replace it with modern, supported alternatives.
