Why We Built Autodots: Solving a Problem Excel Couldn't

Register your garage at autodots.io/partners

When we started talking to garage owners, almost everyone was using the same "system" — a mix of paper job cards, WhatsApp updates, and Excel sheets. It worked, sort of. Until it didn't.

The pattern we kept seeing

Every garage owner had the same hidden costs:

  • Job cards getting lost or misplaced
  • Invoice calculations done manually, with room for error
  • No real inventory tracking — parts ran out mid-job
  • Customers calling repeatedly just to ask "is my car ready?"

None of these felt like "one big problem." They were small inefficiencies stacking up every single day, quietly eating into time and margins.

Why Excel wasn't the answer

Excel is flexible, but flexibility isn't what garage owners needed. They needed something opinionated — a system that already understood job cards, invoicing, and inventory as connected, not three separate spreadsheets someone has to manually update.

What we focused on building

  1. Digital job cards that update in real time
  2. Instant, accurate invoicing — no manual math
  3. Searchable customer history in seconds
  4. Low-stock alerts before a part actually runs out
  5. Automated customer updates, so no one's making repetitive calls

The real insight

The cost of staying on paper never shows up as a single number. It hides in wasted hours and small errors — which makes it easy to ignore until it's reflected in shrinking margins.
That's the gap Autodots was built to close — not by adding more features, but by making the basics just work, without manual effort.

If you're building for a non-technical, high-friction industry, curious what patterns you've noticed — the "small inefficiencies stacking up" problem seems to show up everywhere once you start looking for it.
