OpenAI announces ChatGPT and Whisper APIs

Openai just made a big announcement regarding its API.

From the post:

ChatGPT and Whisper models are now available on our API, giving developers access to cutting-edge language (not just chat!) and speech-to-text capabilities. Through a series of system-wide optimizations, we’ve achieved 90% cost reduction for ChatGPT since December; we’re now passing through those savings to API users. Developers can now use our open-source Whisper large-v2 model in the API with much faster and cost-effective results. ChatGPT API users can expect continuous model improvements and the option to choose dedicated capacity for deeper control over the models. We’ve also listened closely to feedback from our developers and refined our API terms of service to better meet their needs.

Any new announcements related to this technology are notable because of the demonstrations we've seen on this technology so far. Evolutions on how developers can access this functionality is where we might see the most substantial impacts.

Generative AI on DEV

You can follow some of these tags if you want to keep up:

#openai

OpenAI is an artificial intelligence (AI) research laboratory consisting of the for-profit corporation OpenAI LP and its parent company, the non-profit OpenAI Inc.

#chatgpt

GPT models are capable of natural language processing tasks such as text generation, summarization, and analysis. ChatGPT interacts in a conversational way. The dialogue format makes it possible for ChatGPT to answer follow-up questions, admit its mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests.

#whisper

Whisper is a versatile speech recognition model that can transcribe, identify, and translate multiple languages.

I will also remind you that we have policies in place against the publication of unchecked AI-published posts on our community. If you publish here using assistive tools, you must check and verify your work. Using these tools to publish flawed information are things our admins, mods, and moderation tooling, are on the lookout for.

Happy coding! ❤️

Excited to try this out I think its going to be HUGE for us developers!

Agreed. Came here to say the same thing. Having access to the ChatGPT API is a big win for Developers of all kinds. I have several ideas for projects that involve text-based AI, which I can start working on now.

Curious to learn more about whisper and on a hunt to find a good example project on GitHub for my 30days of openai

I think the most "obvious" (though, obviously non-trivial to say the least), is that this closes the loop on Jarvis functionality.

So, build your own Siri where Whisper takes in the audio, translates to text, ChatGPT takes over from there. Specialized for the domain via fine tuning.

I'm definitely curious about the most novel alternative use-cases though.

Will further accelerate the decline in quality of developers

Two unproven statements there:

1) quality of devs is declining (how do you quantify that in the first place?), and

2) that trend is going to be accelerated by OpenAI offering APIs to their products

The only thing that to me seems sure is that, yes, there will be an impact ... change is the only constant.

Well, Ben asked for our 'thoughts on these advancements'. I don't think we need to prove our thoughts?

Mine was purely based on personal observation of a steady march towards convenience culture coding where no-one seems to actually want to learn to code and have the pleasure of using their brains to solve problems on their own. They just want instant, 'cool' results with the minimum of effort... solution appropriateness, efficiency, performance, or understanding of how anything works be damned.

Well yes, if the majority of devs/coders/whatever think like that, then I agree it's not a good thing ... hopefully it's a minority though, and the rest can educate that minority on why they're wrong.

They really need to slow down. They should have left ChatGPT in its current form to mature for a bit to see how that impacts the world economy before taking this to the next level.

Scary times folks.

Anyone who genuinely believes that this thing isn't going to impact the economy and put tonnes of jobs including developers jobs at risk really need to open their eyes. I've recently built a React Native mobile app and GPT helped me with about 50% of the coding. If I'm a two man team, that's 1 of my workforce not needed.

With this sudden release coupled with the awesome power of Whisper, overnight 75% of the medical and legal secretaries alone that exist out there have just entered a path to redundancy.

Ugh, whatever. Like, why do you have to be so strict about everything? It's not like I'm intentionally trying to publish bad stuff. Do you not trust me or something? It's not my fault if the AI messes up sometimes. Can't you just cut me some slack? Jeez.

It would be fun to explore these APi's. :)

Certainly closes the loop on some "usefulness" criteria on the actual dev tools vs what they've demo'd themselves.
