In general my family think I "work with computers" so I'm the go-to for fixing WiFi routers, changing mobile phone settings, updating computers, etc.
I try to tell them this is not a web developer's job, but since I am a bit more technically proficient than them and I can find the solutions via Google they remain unconvinced.
Nice to meet you, ma fren 🫡. Sorry, I ain't DEVing that much ✍️ , primarily due to the nature of maintaining Open Source projects 👷, while also gigging 💰. Anyways, stay humble like a bumblebee 🐝.
Most of them have no clue what I do. Some be like: "wow, you're really patient arranging those words in such a nice way". When they come closer, then they'll begin to complain: "mmm, they're not even meaningful words; you just like typing on your laptop".
My parents and partner have no idea what I do, my partner really tries to understand but when I show them something I’m really excited about they just look at me like 👀👀
They think I'm an entire IT department and can fix all of their IT related problems.
I mean, I do fix their problems, but most of the time, I just do what I always do (aside from moving rectangles around to make a coherent UI of them): I professionally Google the answer. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
They do know I do software development on different projects and that it's complicated, but otherwise they don't understand. When they ask about what I do, I mainly explai what kind of project I work on which is mostly work for various startups. I have friends that are software engineer, computer engineer and robotics engineer that do understand what I do and it's always a pleasure to finally have people to talk about it with.
How’s it going, I'm a Adam, a Full-Stack Engineer, actively searching for work. I'm all about JavaScript. And Frontend but don't let that fool you - I've also got some serious Backend skills.

This is a good question! When I explain what I do I usually say something like "I do coding, sometimes, but mostly I talk to people".
This is of course different depending on what role, type of company and seniority you have. I say code is merely a tool to solve real life problems but that seldom converts into an actual understanding on their side.
Usually they quickly change the subject after this 😂 and I don't blame them!
They think that it is accomplished using a graphic editor (like figma). Even if some of them know the existence of programming languages (from a past time they graduated from a university) they think that this is no longer necessary, nowadays you just need an app builder.
An aspiring artist using code as another medium for creation. I am currently a software developer in an EdTech company focused on improving communication in the workplace. I work heavily in Ruby!
They think that I’m hacking something especially when I’m working on a new project and there is an old project new project and few windows of vs code 😂
@ben I don't think I can ever give more appropriate answer than this 👇😃
That's worryingly accurate 🙃😂😂
sad life
😂😂😂 forget all things just focus on making GIF's
hahahaha! this is freaking hilarious!

exactly, the fam knows you're a software developer and suddenly we are the Geek Squad too.
One picture that sums it all up:
Most of them have no clue what I do. Some be like: "wow, you're really patient arranging those words in such a nice way". When they come closer, then they'll begin to complain: "mmm, they're not even meaningful words; you just like typing on your laptop".
They think it's more about "math" than it really is.
So true, but what is it really about according to you?
Logic and abstraction

That's a classic!
System.out.println("Time Hacked successfully.");
That I work in the Matrix
Especially when they see the terminal running some
npm install
orcmake
.. Those 483648 lines of output do the trickand mine is when they see me do
sudo apt-get update
with zsh and powerlevel10kJust four words:
black magic &&

Don't forget they wonder if you hack into the CIA, NSA, FBI web sites.
hahahahaha! great stuff.. felt super identified when he was watching the video
😆😆😂
"can you fix my printer?"
Classic ^_^
I typically avoid such questions by informing them about the following ...
They do know I do software development on different projects and that it's complicated, but otherwise they don't understand. "ohh, you can get a job everywhere, they are looking everywhere for programmers".
because they can not understand how deversly different these joblistings are.
i don't know ML, i dont know java, i don't know ...
i wonder how difficult companies make it for themselfes, using too many tools and expecting candidates to know all of them.
My mom thinks software development is fixing things on Microsoft Word.
my dad thinks that!
One of my friend says that "I get paid to piss code"
He's not wrong
my girlfriend tells me standups are too long which is quite amuzing, but this is customer standups mind you. Her accuracy knows no bounds :)
She also hates when I write formulas on her spredsheets even if they are great and helpful

Almost every phone call with my mom: "your job requires you sitting there all day - so you'll have reading problem & back problem - poor you".
Me: these can happen to literally every office job. lol
they think my job is to only stare at my 27-inch monitor whole day and sometimes say "yes" while wearing headphones.
It's like playing video games, but with the keyboard and you're the only one who enjoy it

They think it's magic!

They think its tapping away at a keyboard like a TV hacker.
That or I fix printers.
Wizardry
Back a few years ago, my father asked me if my job was "just pushing buttons all day". You know he isn't wrong lol.
They think that I'm getting paid for sitting there and listening to other people at endless meetings.
Fixing PCs
Selling: "baked air"
"He works on the internet".
"I draw really tiny colored squares, millions of them"
They probably think I read emails, attend calls and just type on my computer.
I'm just an advanced version of my father (retired Computer Technician). Unless it's relevant to them.
typing on keyboard
I guess, they understand what I do!
They think that I’m hacking something especially when I’m working on a new project and there is an old project new project and few windows of vs code 😂
The one who fixes laptops and iphones
