Here's what actually works for me:
Google Search Console is the source of truth, but raw GSC data is overwhelming. The key is filtering ruthlessly — I check 3 windows every day: 28-day, 7-day, and 3-month. The 7-day window catches ranking momentum early (I spotted my first page-1 ranking this week by watching the 7-day average position trend downward over several days).
Don't track every page — track page types. Instead of monitoring individual URLs, I group by template: stock pages, sector pages, ETF pages, etc. If one page type consistently underperforms, it's a template problem, not a content problem. This saves hours of spreadsheet wrangling.
Bing Webmaster and Yandex Webmaster are underrated. Google's indexing data can lag 3-5 days. Bing and Yandex often surface quality issues faster. When I saw Bing's index drop by 700 pages before Google's data even refreshed, it was an early warning that something was wrong with my non-English content quality.
Automated auditing > manual checking. I have a scheduled agent that checks page health daily — titles, meta descriptions, schema markup, hreflang tags, HTTP status. It files tickets automatically when something's off. Way more reliable than remembering to check things manually.

When you're running pages across 12 languages, the GSC data gets fragmented across locale variants and it's hard to get a unified view of which content patterns actually work vs. which ones are just getting crawled but never indexed.

Consider working based on templates.
Once a site exceeds a small content set, page-by-page review ceases to be a workable operating model. We’ve seen better results when teams group URLs by template or page type, then track a small set of recurring checks on a schedule: indexability, status changes, Core Web Vitals, internal-linking shifts, and structured-data drift.
That gives you two practical advantages:
For smaller teams, even a simple weekly cadence with GSC + grouped URL reviews goes a long way. The hard part usually is not collecting data; it is deciding what deserves action first.

So many people chase 'we're #1 for XYZ keyword' while ignoring that 50 people searched for it last month. Meanwhile their 'boring' post with 5k monthly impressions is sitting at position 12 and could be #3 with just a better title.
I've started doing this recently: filter GSC by average position 10-20 + 'impressions > 1000' and just optimize those. Low hanging fruit every time.

Honest answer: I stopped trying to build a perfect tracking system and started asking AI tools what they say about the businesses I work with. That's become my most useful "SEO performance" check.
Traditional SEO tracking (GSC, rank trackers, etc.) still matters, but the signal I care about most now is: when someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity "best [service] in [city]," does my client show up? And if so, is the information accurate?
The gap between those two worlds (traditional search performance vs AI search visibility) is where I'm spending most of my time. GSC tells you about Google rankings. It tells you nothing about whether Gemini is recommending your competitor because their structured data is cleaner.

What started working better for me was simplifying the goal first:
-Pick 3–5 core keywords per article.
-Track impressions → clicks → updates (not just rankings).
-Revisit posts after 30 days and tweak intros + headings.
Honestly, most of my wins came from updating existing content rather than publishing new stuff.
