I was losing clients I should have won. Same quality of work, better portfolio than the person who got hired.

Here's what changed everything:

The Problem with Most Proposals

Most freelance proposals are fundamentally backwards. They talk about you — your experience, your portfolio, your process — instead of the client's problem.

Clients don't hire you because you're impressive. They hire you because they believe you'll fix their specific problem.

The Formula That Works

Every winning proposal has this structure:

1. Mirror their problem (first 2 sentences)

"Based on our call, I understand that [their exact words about the problem]. 
This is costing you [what it's really costing them]."

2. State your solution specifically

Not: "I'll help improve your marketing"
Yes: "I'll write 8 email sequences, set up Klaviyo automations, and A/B test subject lines over 6 weeks"

3. Two pricing options

Always give two options. It changes the question from "should I hire this person?" to "which package is right for me?"

  • Standard: $X (core deliverables)
  • Premium: $X + 30% (standard + 2-3 meaningful additions)

4. One clear next step

End with: "Reply YES and I'll send the contract + invoice within 24 hours."

Not: "Let me know if you have questions."

Switching to this format: 40%+ increase in response rate. Shorter sales cycles. Higher average project value (because of the two-option pricing).
