How did you participate and how did you know what to participate in?
I participated by signing up on the Hacktoberfest website! There are all the instructions on the website and closer to the event, the Dev.to team will publish an article with details too, don't worry!
And I looked for repositories, issues that made sense with what I do, which is Frontend. So I looked for things related to this, like updating Documentation, a screen, things like that and everything worked!
I recommend joining the Discord group because people are very helpful and they always share repositories to work on and everything!

Last year was my first participation in this event I have to day that it was a fantastic experience.
So if you're thinking in participating stop too think and do it. It super funny, the community is friendly, you can to meet people and make friends and the t-shirt is amazing
There's no t-shirt this year, but it's still a great time to grow your skillset, meet new people, and get some digital swag.

One small request on the behalf of the open source communities that we consider promoting quality contributions; I am not saying to scale or rate the contributions but there should be a good metric to what we should be considering as a contribution to a particular project.
