Want to help cover #news on DEV?

Update: Thanks to all those who have gotten in touch and are interested in helping with #news. I'm still working through logistics but will do my best to get back to you all soon. Regardless of whether or not you become a mod, I encourage all of you to help create more posts and comment on #news stories that you're interested in!

In an effort to encourage more developer-focused news coverage and conversations in #news, we're looking to create a DEV news team.

The team will be made up of tag moderators who will help us to stay current by writing short news stories and conversation prompts around software development.

#news

Expect to see announcements of new and updated products, services, and features for languages & frameworks. You also will find high-level news relevant to the tech and software development industry covered here.

This group will have tag mod abilities so they can assist by keeping the news tag well-organized & on topic, as well as through promoting relevant & interesting dev news posts. But different from most tag mod expectations, we're particularly looking for folks who are prepared to write for this tag and lead by example β€” posting short newsworthy content and creating articles that will show onlookers how it's done.

We already work with one super awesome #news tag mod, Robin, who has set up some really great guidelines for the tag. With our plans to make this tag a bigger focus on DEV, we'd love to bring on more folks to assist so that we can create the most mind-blowing developer news team anyone has ever seen.

mind-blowing news

Uhh... maybe not that mind-blowing.

So, want to help out? Get in touch with me via email (michael@dev.to), message me over Connect, or leave a note right here in the comments.πŸ‘‡

Only as much as you'd want to in order to "lead by example" as we put more focus on the tag. Definitely wouldn't be a strict thing. We'd more be looking for a light curation touch like we do with all tags on the site. 99% of all tag content should be whomever wants to contribute, but as mods there are opportunities to stoke certain conversations you want to deem newsworthy.

Let me see if I can help out with that!

Basically, I think it'd be cool if we could get a group together to cover current news that's appropriate for devs. Once we build out our group, we can connect in a channel over Connect πŸ˜… and strategize what sort of things we want to cover and what a DEV post might look like. We can also coordinate by messaging each other in this channel if we plan on covering something β€” this way we'll know not to double up on the same news topic.

This idea is still quite new, so will need a bit of brainstorming. But, if you're up for writing short news posts, this tag should be a great fit!

I'm curious about the kind of news posts we're talking about here. Will they be news that interest almost all devs? Or would there be a way to filter through them using tags somehow?

Hey Eyad,

That's right β€” it's somewhat subjective, but we're looking for news posts that are going to be particularly interesting to devs. The subjects could be more high-level general tech news β€” e.g. high profile Twitter accounts were hacked. But it's also cool to get more narrowly-focused, dev-specific news on version upgrades, upcoming features, or security patches for specific languages, frameworks, dev tools, etc.

If you check out the #news landing page and look to the left hand sidebar, you'll see submission guidelines that offer more detail about what we're typically looking for and what isn't a fit. That said, this isn't set in stone, we very well may revamp some of our guidelines once we get the news team together.

I love the idea of having some way to filter #news. I think it'd be cool for folks to be able to browse by tag combos β€” like maybe I want to search for any posts that are tagged #news and #react. Is this kind of what you're thinking?

Yeah tag combos is a good way of putting it. But does dev.to support such feature? When clicking on a tag the url structure doesn't seem like it would allow for mixing multiple tags.

I would be interested in covering #news, as a frontend dev I already keep up with the latest browser updates and ES releases, and wouldn't mind sharing that on here as well.

That's one small step for the tag, one giant leap for DEV

I'm looking forward to more people posting about new products, services and interesting updates under the #news tag!
This will hopefully also attract more companies or teams behind products and services themselves to post here on DEV and also more discussions on those topics ☺️

I think featuring the tag on the homepage will also help to make people aware of changes and even breaking changes much faster.

I run a weekly thread on here showcasing trending web development projects and I have to admit I was unaware of the #news tag, would this be the sort of material that would be useful?
