Heyo!

Awesome to have a vet here. My wife is a veterinarian!

BTW, my name is Michael and I'm a Community Manager at DEV. If you have questions about using the platform, just hit me up!

To answer your question about where to go to learn Rust, for starters, I'd def recommend following the #rust tag!

#rust

This tag is for posts related to the Rust programming language, including its libraries.

Personally, I am not learning Rust nor am I developer, so can't say that I have the best suggestions, but I'm gonna throw a few posts your way anyway from some folks that I think would be helpful.

@link2twenty recently shared this beginner-friendly article:

Also, I've noticed @francescoxx writing lots of Rust content this year!

I'm sure there are others who I am leaving out here, but these are two that come to mind with more recent posts!

Since you're learning AWS, I'd like to point ya to the organization, AWS Community Builders:

There's also AWS Heroes which I believe is again community members, but this group is more vetted and includes highly experienced individuals.

Michael Tharrington

No probs at all! And right on, I'd be happy to give a few general pointers.

This is very dev.to-specific, but one series you might enjoy browsing through is Sloan's Inbox.

Sloan is our mascot here at DEV and each week we share a different questions that comes in from the community. Admittedly, if a question doesn't come in, we typically just make one up that we think would be helpful. 🤫

In any case, there are plenty of questions that come in from beginners and the answer might be helpful to ya!

Also, on this note, if you have a question you wanna ask anonymously, you can send it in via the form here and we'll ask it on your behalf. This can be helpful for amplifying a question you have + if there's something you'd like to ask privately, it gives you the option to do so.

And, as for some more general advice, here are three things I've picked up from listening to others in our community:

1) Just know that it's normal to be overwhelmed. There's soooooo much to learn out there (more than is possible) and a lot of these concepts build on each other. I've heard folks regularly claim that early on they didn't realize how much they didn't know, then there's a point (often several points) where it's like they reach a peak (i.e. they finally get comfy with what they've been leanring), only to realize that there are way many more mountains to climb. Hope this makes sense! I don't mean to be discouraging, rather, I just want to point out that this is a common feeling.

2) If you're learning JS, invest time learning vanilla JS and don't just focus on frameworks. I think there are differences of opinion here, so don't take my word as absolute truth, but in general I often hear folks touting the benefits of learning vanilla JS before getting too attached to any frameworks. Frameworks are used in tandem with JS to make things easier and more efficient but they can also limit you and hold you back from learning about what's going on underneath. Don't get me wrong, I don't think you have to avoid them for forever, but it's good to be aware of the pros and cons.

3) Early on, you'll probably become a generalist, learning many different things across many expertise, but as you go on, you'll have the option to specialize... continually consider what it is you want to do and how to get there. I'm not saying that you have to have a fully concrete idea of what you're hoping to become and stick with it. Rather, I think you should try out many different things and learn a little bit about each... that way you get a taste of what's out there + a good sense of what the different roles focus on and how they work together. If you have in mind that you want to work with AI, but then as you get into it, you find it's not for you, you can change... you can change back too! Continually expanding your knowledge will open up new pathways and new realizations. I'd recommend looking up the concept of a T-shaped developer as this is what I hear many folks are striving to become.

Hope this info is helpful and best of luck to ya out there, Chris!

Hello
I'm a former construction worker changing careers due to being too old and worn out to carry on with what I used to do physically. After a bit of noodling about figuring out what to do next I have reached the conclusion that development is the way forward for me because this allows me to continue to build things, just in a less strenuous way.

I'm currently learning vanilla js, node js, react, and mongodb, along with continuing to work with HTML, and css.

Nice to meet you all.

Welcome Mat! My name is Michael and I'm a Community Manager here. It's great to meet ya!

I totally hear ya on the transition and hope that it goes well for ya. It's kinda cool to move from constructing the physical (buildings I'm guessing) to constructing the abstract (code) haha. As you said "continue to build things, just in a less strenuous way."

It sounds like you're starting off on a good foot from what I hear. Admittedly, I am not a developer, so I'm not gonna claim that I know the "best" path, but many folks claim that it's good to get a basic understanding programming Vanilla JS before going to deep in frameworks — it apparently helps to have an underlying understanding.

Well, that's all I have to say for now.

I'm searching for a changing point in my career 😬 I've taught math since 2008, and now I've been forced to change my career because of health problems. In my path as a professor, I've learned several programming skills, like coding in Matlab, Python, and others. By degree, I've achieved a Ms. degree in Mechanical Engineering, and I worked on different projects that involved Finite Element Model and programming. Now, I've started a crazy journey in Web Development, mainly because I have always been a fan of JS. Now I've started a Front-end path career in Codecademy, and after I finish, I will move to Back-end path, aiming to achieve a Full-stack position in the market.

💭 Feel free to give me any tips and advice, or just start any topic about science (math or physics) 🎓, coding 💻, or Metal 🤘 music. I will appreciate any message 💜...

hihi
Long time Lurker. First time poster. Fell in love with this community after a few reads on some how-to-termux postings. I like to mod my android, custom recoveries, custom kernels, custom roms, those sort of things. I have hard/soft bricked my phones many times, bootloops are way more easier to deal with, but every time I get it back to stock. Having banged my head against the wall enough times that doesn't happen anymore. I like old xiaomi, one plus, and motorola. I have done a rootfull untethered unc0ver jb for an a12 14.4.1 ios. I am a forever distro hopper. I haven't found my one true love yet. Maybe one day a riced out Arch? I dunno. My main work space is a M1 mac, but I do have amd and intel laptops that I experiment with and try different things out on. Don't know what else to say but thanks for the reading.

Hello all!
I've learned of Dev.to from Hacktoberfest 2023 reward kit (🎗️), but came here just a few days ago. I've got a couple of ideas that might be useful for software developers, and get more useful when they're shared: betting on bugs in a project, and EigenFlow system for social networks to go with EigenKarma!

ProgramCrafter

I've just found out there is no description for EigenKarma on Dev.to yet; so there's a short one in order.
That's a system maintaining karma values, where user doesn't see sitewide karma value for others, but rather his own. Likes (or whatever the service decides to call them) are transitive with a certain coefficient, so that forms a trust graph, which can be used for evaluating content, or distributing quality-requiring work.

hiEveryone,

I started IT back in 2002, basically HTML. In 2011 I did some hands-on in Networking, Structured cabling & Fibre optics, IP/PBX, Java. I really don’t have work experience as I ghosted on IT, my excuse was building a business (outside of IT). I current see myself as a beginner in IT. Last year I took up a 1yr self-paced Cyber Security course. I am yet to complete the modules and it expires 30/03/24, certification exams comes up just before it expires. I seek any sort of motivation or guide, and to learn from you all. Cheers!

Hi There!

Marco here

I have been a systems technician for about 20 years and in the last 6 years been learning about bash scripting language on my own.
During the time in my previous job, I wrote some scripts to make incremental postgresql database backups using rsync, which proved to be crucial in a network environment where internet bandwidth was very poor.

Looking forward to start learning Python as I was told it is currently a very popular and useful programming language for many tasks.

Thanks and best regards.
