How to Pass a Data Center Operations Technician Interview at AWS/Google (Physical Triage Cheatsheet)

When software engineers prep for interviews, they grind LeetCode. But when hardware engineers and technicians prepare for Data Center Operations Technician (DCO / DCT) loops at hyperscalers (AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Meta, Equinix), the barrier isn't dynamic programming — it's real data hall muscle memory.

Interviewers routinely fail candidates with solid IT degrees because they can't isolate an uncorrectable ECC DIMM bank across consecutive test boots, don't understand MPO polarity, or don't know why missing a 1U blanking panel throttles an 8x H100 GPU node.

Here is the essential physical and command-line triage cheatsheet required for hyperscale loops, backed by our open-source field reference.

1. Physical Layer: TIA-598-D Optical Fiber Color Codes

If you work on a fiber trunk, ribbon breakout, or loose-tube splice, you must recite this 12-color sequence without thinking:

Position Color Mnemonic Anchor
1 Blue Boys
2 Orange Or
3 Green Girls
4 Brown Bring
5 Slate (Gray) Some
6 White Whiskey
7 Red Right
8 Black Before
9 Yellow You
10 Violet Venture
11 Rose (Pink) Round
12 Aqua Alaska

MPO/MTP Polarity Architectures

  • Method A (Straight-Through): Key-Up to Key-Down. Fiber 1 connects to Fiber 1.
  • Method B (Cross-Over / Reversed) — Hyperscale Standard: Key-Up to Key-Up. Fiber 1 connects to Fiber 12. Standard for parallel optical transceivers (40GBASE-SR4, 100GBASE-SR4, 400G-DR4).
  • Method C (Pair-Wise Flip): Key-Up to Key-Down. Pairs are flipped (1-2 becomes 2-1).

2. Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM) Diagnostics in Linux

When a 100G/400G link flaps or reports CRC errors, don't guess. Query the transceiver EEPROM directly:

bash
# Query transceiver hardware specs, serial number, and vendor
sudo ethtool -i eth0

# Read live optical power levels (Tx/Rx), temperature, and bias current
sudo ethtool -m eth0
