Common Mistakes in Web Design

The way a website is designed tells a lot about your company. It shows the organizational level, the attention to detail, and what type of value your company places on the information it is providing to your current and potential customers. While creating a website has become almost cookie cutter, there are still some mistakes that can be made. Here are a few of the most common that are easily avoidable.

Forgetting to Add a Search Box

There are going to be times when people come to your website looking for something specific. If you forget to put in that search box, you may lose out on potential customers because they are not able to find precisely what they want immediately. Putting a search box right at the top of your website allows for those specific customers to find what they need right away, leaving them happy with the type of experience you want them to have.

Overlooking Your Ideal Audience

When designing your website, you need to keep your audience in mind. For example, if you are targeting school teachers, having a web design that looks like a heavy metal band designed it may be a little confusing. You also want to make sure that your content follows the same rule. Keep your audience in mind during each phase of the website’s design so that you know you will appeal to their needs when they come to your site. If you can put yourself into the shoes of your audience, you will be more able to look at how your site maneuvers through their eyes and customize it for the best experience possible.

Navigation Issues

One of the hardest parts to creating any website is making sure the navigation is simple for anyone to use. You may have people who are very internet savvy on your website most of the time, but what happens when you have a total novice show up on your website? You need to make sure your tabs are set so that people know what they are clicking on and are not left wondering what they are supposed to do when faced with your home page (or any other page, for that matter).

Lack of Balance

Websites need to remain balanced. They need content, open spaces, organizational tools, and navigational tools that will help people use the services you have to offer. If you do not find a proper balance for your website of all of these elements, you are likely going to have a website that appears disorganized or too complicated for some (or most) of your users. Find a way to be able to use the tools you need while keeping a balance in mind that lets your website remain user friendly.

Ambiguity

One of the worst mistakes that people forget to take into account is whether or not people will be able to tell what your website is about in a few seconds. If visitors come to your site and see a beautifully landscaped yard, for example, they are going to guess gardening or landscaping is what your site is based on. The problem is, if your site is about pet training services, they are likely going to leave confused instead of spending the time trying to figure it out.

Getting your website set up is a great step in reaching a new audience. However, making any of these mistakes can cost you some of the visitors that you were working so hard to pull in. Make sure you set up your website with your visitor’s needs in mind and you should be well on your way to creating the website of your visitor’s dreams.
