I Ran $0 in Ads for 6 Months. Here's What Actually Drove Traffic.

Everyone talks about paid acquisition. Nobody talks about what happens when you can't afford it.

Six months ago, I launched a digital product business with $0 marketing budget. No Facebook ads. No Google Ads. No sponsored posts. Nothing.

Today, I have 100+ articles live, a growing library of digital products, and actual traffic coming in. Not viral traffic. Not "quit your day job" traffic. But real traffic from real people who found me through content.

Here's exactly what worked, what didn't, and the numbers behind it.

The Starting Point

I sell operations checklists and kits for small teams — incident response templates, compliance checklists, automation starter packs. Prices range from $4 to $249.

The target audience is small business owners and solo founders who need operational help but can't afford a full-time ops manager.

The challenge: how do you reach them with $0?

What Didn't Work

1. Twitter/X Threads

I wrote 12 threads about operations and small business productivity. Total impressions: 847. Total clicks: 3.

Twitter is a firehose. Without an existing audience or paid promotion, your threads disappear in minutes.

Verdict: Not worth the time for a cold start.

2. LinkedIn Posts

I posted 20 times on LinkedIn. Total impressions: 1,200. Total clicks: 7.

LinkedIn's algorithm favors established accounts and personal stories. As a new account with no connections, my posts were invisible.

Verdict: Better than Twitter, but still not worth the time investment.

3. Reddit

I posted in r/smallbusiness, r/entrepreneur, and r/SaaS. Two posts got removed for self-promotion. One got 3 upvotes. One got downvoted to zero.

Reddit hates self-promotion. Even helpful content gets flagged if it links to a product.

Verdict: Only works if you're an established community member. Not for cold starts.

What Actually Worked

1. Dev.to Articles (The Winner)

I published 100+ articles on dev.to over 6 months. Topics: AI, DevOps, productivity, automation, small business operations.

Results:

  • 200+ total views
  • 0 reactions (still working on this)
  • 3 articles with 10+ views each
  • 1 article that drove actual product clicks

The key insight: dev.to articles are evergreen. Unlike social media posts that disappear in hours, articles on dev.to get indexed by Google and continue to drive traffic months after publication.

My best-performing articles aren't the ones about my products. They're the ones about problems my audience has:

  • "What to automate first in a small team"
  • "The first 30 minutes of incident response"
  • "How to run a security audit with no budget"

These articles get found through search and dev.to's internal recommendation engine. They include CTAs to my products, but the content comes first.

The formula: Problem-focused title → actionable content → soft CTA → repeat.

2. SEO-Optimized Blog Content

I built a website with 250+ pages of operations content. Each page targets a specific search query:

  • "data breach response checklist"
  • "incident response runbook template"
  • "office closure procedures"
  • "vendor management checklist"

Results:

  • 250+ pages indexed by Google
  • Steady (if small) organic traffic
  • Several pages ranking on page 2-3 for target keywords
  • IndexNow submissions speed up indexing

The key insight: long-tail SEO compounds. Each page is a lottery ticket. Most won't rank, but the ones that do drive consistent traffic forever.

3. Product Directory Listings

I listed my products on several product directories. Most drove 0 traffic. But two sent a handful of visitors each month.

Results:

  • 10+ directory submissions
  • 2 directories sending consistent (if small) traffic
  • 0 sales from directory traffic (yet)

The key insight: directories are a numbers game. Most won't drive traffic, but the ones that do are free and permanent.

The Numbers After 6 Months

Channel Investment Traffic Sales
Dev.to articles ~100 hrs 200+ views 0
SEO blog content ~200 hrs Growing 0
Product directories ~5 hrs Trickle 0
Twitter/X ~10 hrs 847 impressions 0
LinkedIn ~5 hrs 1,200 impressions 0
Reddit ~2 hrs Removed/downvoted 0
Total ~320 hrs Growing 0

Yes, 0 sales. I'm not going to sugarcoat it. But the infrastructure is being built. 250+ pages of SEO content. 100+ dev.to articles. Product listings. All compounding.

The Lesson

$0 marketing is not free. It costs time. A lot of it. But the assets you build — articles, pages, directory listings — are permanent. They don't disappear when you stop paying.

Paid ads stop the moment you stop paying. My articles will keep driving traffic for years.

The question isn't "can you market with $0?" The question is "are you willing to invest 6 months of content creation for a traffic engine that runs forever?"

I was. And while I'm still at 0 sales, the traffic is growing. The content is compounding. And the products are ready for when the traffic converts.

What I'd Do Differently

  1. Start with fewer, higher-quality articles. I published 100+ articles. 20 great articles would have been better than 100 mediocre ones.
  2. Focus on one channel first. I spread across 6 channels. I should have gone deep on dev.to first, then expanded.
  3. Write for search, not for social. Social traffic is fleeting. Search traffic compounds.
  4. Add CTAs from day one. My early articles had no CTAs. I'm now going back and adding them. Don't make my mistake.

The Plan for the Next 6 Months

  1. Publish 2 articles per week on dev.to (quality over quantity)
  2. Optimize top 10 articles with better CTAs and internal links
  3. Build 50 more SEO pages targeting long-tail keywords
  4. Submit to 20 more product directories
  5. Engage on dev.to — comment on others' articles, build a following

The goal: 1,000 monthly views and first sale by month 12.
