I Built a Free Seating Chart Generator (Because Zola Charges $180/Year)

Last year I was helping my sister plan her wedding. She found this beautiful tool on Zola for managing seating charts — drag tables, assign guests, it looked perfect. But when she tried to export the chart as a PDF for her venue, Zola hit her with a paywall: "Upgrade to Premium for $180/year."

She had already spent months using Zola's free features — RSVPs, guest list, registry. But for one seating chart, they wanted $180.

I thought: there's got to be a better way.

The Problem

Wedding planning platforms follow the same playbook:

  1. Let you browse beautiful templates for free (engaging, addictive)
  2. Let you build up data — guest lists, RSVPs, seating arrangements (investment of time)
  3. Put a paywall on the one thing you actually need (frustration)
  4. Demand $150-180/year to unlock it (rage quit)

It's a subscription trap disguised as a wedding planning tool. And it preys on people who just need to make one thing — a seating chart — and are willing to pay a year's subscription for it.

But why pay $180 for a tool you'll use once?

What I Built

Table Planner / Event Seating Chart Generator — a completely free, zero-signup, browser-based seating chart generator.

  • No account. Open the page, add tables, drag guests, download.
  • No paywall. PDF export is free. Forever.
  • No watermark. Clean, print-ready charts instantly.
  • No data collection. Everything runs in your browser. Guest names never touch a server.
  • Works offline. Once loaded, you don't even need internet.

How It Works

  1. Add your event details — wedding name, date, venue
  2. Create tables — round or rectangular, with labels and capacities
  3. Add guests — type in names, search and manage your guest list
  4. Drag & drop — pull guests from the pool onto any table
  5. Export — download a beautiful PDF seating chart for your venue

That's it. Thirty seconds to start, minutes to finish.

Features

  • Drag-and-drop interface — HTML5 native, no libraries, smooth and responsive
  • Round and rectangular tables — matches your actual venue setup
  • Live visual layout — see exactly how your tables and guests are arranged
  • PDF export — print-ready, A3 landscape format, perfect for venue handout
  • Auto-save — everything persists in your browser's localStorage
  • Guest search — find and manage guests in large wedding parties
  • Privacy first — your guest names never leave your device

Why It Matters

Wedding planning is expensive enough. You're spending thousands on venues, catering, and decor. You shouldn't have to pay $180/year for a tool that does one thing.

This tool is built for couples who want elegance without the cost. No Canva subscription. No Zola premium. No accounting for your in-laws' names in a spreadsheet.

Just open the page, build your chart, and print it.

The Bigger Picture

I've been building free alternatives to paid tools because I believe software should serve people, not trap them. Canva's $13/month for PDF export. Zola's $180/year for seating charts. Placeit's $180/year for product mockups.

The pattern is always the same: let you build investment, then lock the exit.

My tools are different. They're free forever. No accounts. No data collection. No dark patterns.

If you need a seating chart, try it here. It's free. No strings attached.
