Building "🔥Roast Me🤪" with GitHub Copilot - A 1-Day Build Challenge

This is a submission for the GitHub Copilot Challenge: New Beginnings / Fresh Starts / Transitions and Transformations

I am currently participating in the GitHub Copilot 1-Day Build Challenge, where the mission was to complete a project in just 24 hours with the help of GitHub Copilot. Running from January 8th to January 19th, the challenge's theme was "New Beginnings / Fresh Starts / Transitions and Transformations." Inspired by this, I decided to create something fun for the developer community: an interactive GitHub README Roast GeneratorRoast Me! 🔥

🔥 What is "Roast Me"?

Roast Me is a playful web application that generates funny, AI-powered roasts based on GitHub profile READMEs. Simply enter a GitHub profile URL, and the app fetches the README.md file, analyzes it using AI, and crafts a humorous roast complete with emojis. This tool is designed to add a bit of humor to our coding journeys, making the development world a little more entertaining.

🚀 Building "Roast Me" in 1 Day Using GitHub Copilot

For this project, I leveraged VS Code with GitHub Copilot, taking full advantage of its AI-driven features to speed up the development process. GitHub Copilot assisted me by:

  • Suggesting Code Snippets: Provided relevant code suggestions that accelerated the coding process.
  • Generating Tests: Helped create robust tests to ensure the app's functionality.
  • Debugging: Assisted in identifying and resolving issues quickly.
  • Multi-file Editing: Streamlined the workflow across different files.

Thanks to GitHub Copilot, I was able to complete the project in just over 1 hour and 20 minutes! 🎉

Check out the full development journey in my YouTube video, where I recorded the entire build from scratch:

⚠️ It might be better to skip to what this is, because of my incorrect English. 🤪😅

🛠️ The Tech Stack

  • Frontend: Next.js 15, TypeScript, TailwindCSS, ShadcnUI
  • Backend: Next.js API Routes
  • AI: Meta-Llama-3.1-8B-Instruct
  • API Integration: GitHub API for fetching README.md files
  • Deployment: Vercel

🤖 How GitHub Copilot Helped

I used GitHub Copilot extensively throughout the development process, and it helped in several key areas:

1. Project Setup

  • Generated the initial boilerplate code for the Next.js project.
  • Seamlessly assisted in setting up TypeScript and TailwindCSS configurations.

2. Debugging

  • Swiftly resolved API errors, UI glitches, and type-related issues.
  • Highlighted and suggested fixes for ESLint errors and other code issues.
  • Allowed me to focus on building creative features rather than getting stuck on technical snags.

3. Smart Commit Messages

  • Copilot saved me time by analyzing my recent changes and generating appropriate Git commit messages.
  • Eliminated the need for manually crafting commit messages while keeping them meaningful and context-aware.

4. Ghost Text Auto-Completion

  • Anticipated my next steps and provided intelligent autocompletion with "ghost text."
  • Significantly reduced development time by streamlining repetitive tasks.

5. Copilot Chat in VS Code

  • With GitHub Copilot's chat and cursor select features, I could request modifications for specific parts of the code without needing to input the entire file.
  • This feature helped refine my code faster and more effectively.

6. TypeScript and Error Handling

  • TypeScript projects often involve type errors, ESLint issues, and other challenges.
  • GitHub Copilot identified these errors and suggested actionable fixes, saving me from lengthy debugging sessions.

🎉 The Challenges and Fun Parts

Building "Roast Me" within a 24-hour window was both challenging and exhilarating. GitHub Copilot's guidance made the process smoother, allowing me to experiment freely and overcome coding hurdles efficiently. One of the highlights was watching the AI generate friendly, humorous roasts based on real GitHub profiles, showcasing how AI can foster creativity and fun in development.

🔍 Conclusion

Participating in the GitHub Copilot 1-Day Build Challenge was an incredible experience. With GitHub Copilot's assistance, I successfully developed "Roast Me" — a fun and interactive web app that highlights the power of AI in modern software development. This challenge not only tested my coding skills under time constraints but also demonstrated how AI tools like Copilot can enhance both productivity and creativity.

Hey Jackson, I see you're a full-stack dev from India 😊. Your GitHub README is like a Bollywood movie - it's got everything: dramatic GIFs 🎥, cryptic coding references 🔥, and a cameo from your Twitter avatar 🤴. But let's be real, who needs all those languages and tools when you've got JavaScript 😂? You're like the jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none, minus the jack! 😂 And what's with all the social media links? Are you trying to be the superhero of the coding world? 🦸‍♂️ You've got GitHub, Twitter, Dev.to, LinkedIn... I'm starting
