I'm 12. I'm building a privacy-first Virtual Try-On tool. Would you use it?

The virtual try-on (VTO) market is projected to hit $15.29 billion in 2026. Yet, despite this explosive growth, only 1.4% of shoppers use it regularly.

Why? Because research consistently shows that 86.6% of consumers cite privacy concerns as a significant barrier. People want to see how clothes look on them, but they absolutely refuse to upload photos of their bodies to faceless corporate servers.

I'm building ACA, a virtual try-on tool with one core, non-negotiable promise:
Your photo never leaves your phone.

No permanent server storage. No data harvesting.

The Problem with Current VTO

Right now, the photo upload step is the critical gate in the VTO funnel. If it feels clunky, confusing, or invasive, the entire experience collapses. Most tools are either locked to a single retailer's ecosystem or require you to hand over biometric data to a third-party cloud.

The ACA Approach

I am building ACA to be a universal, privacy-first tool.

  • Short-term: Validating the workflow with secure, ephemeral API processing (with clear, upfront consent).
  • Long-term: Integrating on-device machine learning (like Mobile-VTON) so the inference happens entirely locally on your device.

I Need Your Feedback

Right now, I'm in the validation phase. I'm curious:

  1. If a tool let you see how a garment looked on you without requiring storing your image, would you use it?
  2. What is your biggest hesitation or frustration with current virtual try-on tools?

I'm building this entirely on a $150 phone, and I'll be sharing the technical journey (including the challenges of on-device ML and privacy-preserving architecture) right here.

Let me know your thoughts! πŸ―πŸ‘•

Yes please don't forget to share the technical journey. But how are you going to make it accurate enough? Also we can't run big models on a $150 phone right?

effessdev, that is the exact right question to ask! You hit the nail on the head: running a massive diffusion model locally on a budget device is a massive engineering challenge.

That’s exactly why ACA is being built in two distinct phases to be realistic about hardware limits:

  1. Phase 1 (The MVP): We are validating the workflow and user experience using a lightweight, cost-effective API. This proves people actually want the privacy-first workflow without us burning battery or compute locally just yet.

  2. Phase 2 (The Moat): This is where the real engineering happens. We aren't trying to run a 1.5B parameter model on day one. The goal is to leverage highly distilled, mobile-optimized architectures (like the 415M parameter Mobile-VTON) combined with aggressive quantization (4-bit/8-bit) and WebGPU/WASM optimizations.

Will the initial local version be as fast or high-res as a cloud server? No. But the trade-off is absolute privacy. Even if the local version is slower or initially limited to specific garment types (like basic t-shirts), it proves the core concept: zero data leaves the device.

I’ll be documenting every single bottleneck, benchmark, and failure along the way. The $150 phone constraint isn't a bug; it’s the ultimate stress test for efficient, accessible AI. πŸ―πŸ“±

Why do your replies look sooo AI-generated? 😭

Haha, you caught me! πŸ˜‚ I’ll be 100% honest with you: I do use AI to help me polish my replies.

Typing out long, technical explanations on a $150 phone is really slow, and I want to make sure I’m communicating my ideas clearly. I basically use AI as a super-powered spellchecker and editor to structure my thoughts.

But I promise you, the code, the architecture, the bugs, and the 3 AM frustrations of trying to get these models to run on a budget device are 100% human. The AI doesn't know how to fix a Supabase RLS error or figure out why a quantized model is crashing my phone. That’s all me. πŸ˜…

You’re totally right though, I should probably dial back the "corporate dev speak" and just talk like a normal builder. Thanks for keeping me honest!

But seriously, I’d love to know your actual thoughts on the technical approach. If you were trying to run this on a low-end device, how would you tackle it?

I'd prefer unpolished replies, honestly πŸ˜…

Haha, fair enough! πŸ˜… I'll drop the fancy formatting then.

Honestly, it's just me typing this out on my phone right now, trying to figure out how to get these models to run without melting my battery. The documentation for mobile VTON is pretty messy, and I'm mostly just trial-and-erroring it in Termux at this point.

If you have any actual tips on running lightweight models on low-end hardware, I'm all ears.

Thanks for keeping it real with me though, I genuinely appreciate it! 🐯

Can you do something to prove that you're not a bot? Just for fun? πŸ˜‚

Haha, challenge accepted. πŸ€–πŸš«

Proof I am a real human:

  1. I am currently typing this with one thumb.
  2. My phone battery is at 25% and I'm ignoring my mom telling me to go eat dinner.
  3. An AI bot wouldn't be actively crying over messy Mobile-VTON documentation while trying to keep a $150 phone from overheating in Termux.
  4. I just typo'd "humna" and had to backspace.

If you still suspect I'm an AI, I can literally send you a picture of my chaotic desk setup right now. πŸ˜‚

But seriously, what’s your ultimate bot-detection test? Now I’m curious.

I don't know πŸ˜‚ I know you are a real person. I was just checking whether this is your AI agent or something trying to pretend it's you. But I'd love to see your desk setup! Send it if it's okay!

Haha, I would send a pic, but I have a major confession: my "desk setup" is literally just my bed. πŸ˜‚

The entire HYNAWEB headquarters consists of a $150 phone, a tangled charging cable, and a pillow. That's it. If I send a photo, you will literally just see a blanket and a glowing screen.

But hey, some of the best code is written horizontally!

Glad you know I'm real though. Now I gotta go fix a Supabase RLS policy before my mom takes my phone away for dinner. πŸ―πŸ›οΈ
