The Real Future of Software: Autonomous Collaboration

We're building toward the wrong future.

The tech world obsesses over autonomous agents—AI that writes entire codebases, deploys applications, fixes bugs without human intervention. We imagine a future where developers become managers of robot workers, reviewing pull requests from GPT-7 and approving deployments suggested by Claude Opus 5.

But this vision misses something fundamental about what makes software development actually work.

The future isn't autonomous agents. It's autonomous collaboration.

The difference matters more than you think.

The Myth of the Solo AI Developer

Every few months, someone announces a breakthrough: "AI writes complete app from one prompt!" The demo looks impressive. A founder types "build me a task manager with authentication" and watches as an AI agent generates React components, sets up a database, writes API endpoints, and deploys to production.

Then reality hits.

The authentication doesn't handle edge cases. The database schema doesn't scale. The API has no rate limiting. The frontend works on desktop but breaks on mobile.
