Chapter 1: From Prompts to Skills

A good prompt can still be a bad way of working.

That was one of the first things I noticed when I started using ChatGPT regularly.

Often, I remembered a prompt, but not always exactly. Rebuilding it from memory is a flaky approach. Which context mattered? Which instruction made the answer useful? Had I changed the method when I reconstructed it?

Chapter 1 of Claude Code Beyond the Prompt starts with that problem.

One-off prompting is useful, but repeated work exposes its limits. Context is lost between sessions. Instructions drift. Results vary.
Once I realized that, the next step was obvious: make the method explicit and move it out of my head.

The chapter traces that move from prompt to pattern, method, and reusable template. Skills, workflows, and agents come later, but they all grow from the same idea.

So the question behind Chapter 1 is simple:_ When does a useful prompt need to become a reusable method?_

If you have a collection of prompts you keep rewriting, this chapter is probably for you.
