Chapter 2: What Agentic Engineering Actually Means

What does “agentic” actually mean?

When writing Claude Code Beyond the Prompt, I realized early on that “agentic” has become one of those words that gets used for almost everything. And it is not the only buzzword around AI.

That becomes a problem once you try to build something.

I spent more time defining them than I expected, because vague language leads to vague design decisions.

Chapter 2 gets the vocabulary straight: model, tool, skill, agent, context, memory, and access. It gives you the mental model I use throughout the rest of the book.

If you want to understand what actually makes a system agentic before you start building one, start here. The same mental model applies well beyond Claude Code.
