GitHub Signup Blocked with “We detected unusual activity” — How Can I Fix This?

I am attempting to create a new GitHub account, but the signup process consistently fails with the following message immediately after completing the CAPTCHA:

“We couldn’t create your account. We detected unusual activity and are unable to complete your signup.”

I am unable to proceed beyond this point.

What I Have Already Tried

To rule out common issues, I have already tried the following:

  • Using different networks (Wi‑Fi, mobile data, different ISP)
  • Using multiple browsers (Chrome, Edge)
  • Trying Incognito/Private mode
  • Disabling VPN, extensions, and ad blockers
  • Verifying JavaScript and cookies are enabled
  • Waiting for some time between attempts
  • Trying alternative usernames and a valid email address

The error persists regardless of these attempts.

What I Am Trying to Understand

I am looking for concrete technical insight or a verified solution to the following:

  1. What specifically triggers GitHub’s “unusual activity” detection during the signup process?
  2. Is this detection typically a temporary automated block, and how long does it normally take before it resets?
  3. Are there any known ways to resolve this without waiting for long periods or relying solely on GitHub Support?
  4. Could factors such as IP reputation, browser fingerprinting, corporate email domains, or previous failed attempts cause this?
  5. Is there any recommended technical workaround that has reliably solved this for others?

  • Intended username: Mouniesh-Kovan (open to alternatives)
  • Email used: a valid company‑domain email
  • CAPTCHA succeeds without issue
  • Region: India

Why I Am Asking

I understand that GitHub Support is the official route, and I have already prepared to contact them. However, I am also looking for explanations or solutions from others who have encountered and resolved the same issue.

Any technical insight, explanation, or confirmed workaround would be helpful.

You can also try creating an account with an alternate email address or with a social login (including Google). Once your account is successfully created, you can update the email address associated with your account to your preferred email in your Emails settings page. See Managing email preferences.
