I Turned My Startup Into Open-Source

I am posting a lot over dev.to, but I think nobody knows who I really am :)

For the last ten years, I have been playing the role of a full-stack developer and a team leader for various companies.

After six years of work, I decided I needed a change.
I quit my job and became a digital nomad 😎

Just a reminder that this was a pre-covid time, and remote working was not as today.

I was traveling with my friend without working, just relaxing, and I got a phone call from my previous company.

"Please come work for us. We will let you work part-time remotely."

Back in the day, that sounded like a dream - and it really was.

This is me traveling in Taiwan 🀩

But quickly enough, I had too much free time, so I decided to do something!

I had a bunch of failed startups/projects.

Until I started Linvo πŸŽ‰

Linvo was a good and bad startup at the same time.
On the one hand, it gives a lot of value to sales and HR personas.
On the other hand, it breaks Linkedin T&S, and that can get you banned from Linkedin :(

I was determined to succeed and create revolutionary features such as the screen sharing app. It worked for a while but wasn't sustainable, and I didn't make enough money to live from it.

I flew back to my country to work for a few months in a coworking space on Linvo 2.0.

While there, I met two super interesting friends: Dima and Tomer, the founders of Novu.

Novu was not a big success back then, and we became good friends.
We talked about marketing, sales, and product. You name it.

And just when I was about to fly again to another country, they raised their $6.6M round for Novu 🀩
They changed their product from a marketing/product base to a developer one.

Just before they raised the money they offered me to join Novu, I said NO. I had to release Linvo 2.0 and see what happens.

And then I flew to Thailand and got a message from Dima asking if I had changed my mind. So I said maybe, but let me deal with Linvo a little bit.

Finally, after a while, I decided it was time to sell Linvo and go all in with Novu.

So while I am in multiple due diligence with buyers, I have decided to put some of the Linvo code out for open-source.

That doesn't benefit a lot to Linvo as a SaaS product.

But I feel it connects me more with the open-source movement so that I can learn a big part of it more!

You can check out the project here! :)

Please give me a star so I know I did something good πŸ™ŒπŸ»

Love you all :)

Love you

I have lately also started to teach How to get GitHub stars

We were expecting continuity πŸ˜†. You didn't say you finally closed Linvo, you didn't say when you started with Nuvo. More details about Linvo scrapper would have been nice. But hey, you've done great for yourself πŸ‘πŸΎ

I was surprised that there wasn't more story after Linvo went open-source.

It's partially open-source :)
Only the scraping part.
And I just did it a day ago πŸ˜†
So I can't share a lot of findings

Makes sense, but I felt kinda bad without an ending to that great story. Would love to hear more interesting ones!

Scraping break Linkedin T&S, you can see big companies came around anyway like:
expandi.io, linkedhelper.com.

Linkedin can't sue automation but they can block.

On the other hand, it looks like they are not fighting automation like facebook and instagram, I guess it brings business after all.

The scraping is easy, having to deal with blocking is hard.

The big deal here is that you risked and used failed projects as opportunity for future. Most people have fears on risks and the changes over their daily routines. Bravo!
