What Is an Infinite Canvas OS? A Look at Novastart

For as long as most of us have used computers, the desktop has been a fixed rectangle the size of the monitor. Windows pile on top of one another, the one you need is always buried, and the more you take on, the more cramped it feels. An infinite canvas operating system starts from a different premise. Novastart, which became available to download and install on October 12, 2026, is built entirely around that idea.

From a fixed desktop to an endless workspace

In a traditional OS, the edges of your screen are the edges of your workspace. In an infinite canvas OS, the screen is just a view onto a much larger surface. Novastart replaces the traditional desktop with one infinite canvas, giving users more space for their everyday work.

Every app sits somewhere on that canvas. Instead of minimizing, stacking and hunting for windows, you scroll and pan to move between apps, the way you would move around a large map. When you want the big picture, you zoom out to see everything at once. The layout is spatial, so where something sits becomes part of how you remember it.

A canvas that remembers

A desktop usually forgets your arrangement the moment you close things down. On Novastart, each canvas reopens exactly as it was left. The workspace you built yesterday is still there today, with every app where you put it, so you can pick up where you stopped.

The apps you already use

An operating system only matters if it runs the tools you rely on. Novastart opens more than 30 web apps, including Chrome, Claude, ChatGPT, Gmail, Excel, WhatsApp and Notion, as standalone windows on the canvas. Your email, your spreadsheets, your messaging and your AI assistants can each have their own place, side by side.

A canvas you can share with your team

A large shared surface also changes collaboration. In Novastart, teammates join a shared canvas by email invitation. Once they're in, they can click and type in one another's windows at the same time, working from their own computers. Windows stream directly from machine to machine, so the whole team works together on the same canvases. It's closer to sitting at the same computer than to watching someone share a screen.

Room for AI agents, too

The extra space also gives AI agents somewhere visible to work. In Novastart, AI agents click and type with cursors of their own. Each agent gets its own mouse and keyboard inside the operating system, so several agents can work at the same time without taking over yours. A lead agent can split a job among up to 10 helpers, each with a labeled cursor in its own window, and you can watch them interact with apps right on the canvas. You can pause or correct a run midway and take a window back with one click.

As Thomas Fraher, Novastart's co-founder and CTO, puts it: "Every agent has its own cursor on the same canvas as you, and nothing happens where you can't watch it."

Two ways to run it

Novastart can be used in two ways. The Novastart app runs the full operating system in a window on Windows 10 or 11 and on Intel-based Macs, which makes it easy to try alongside your current setup. For a full switch, Novastart OS installs as the operating system on Intel and other x86 PCs from a USB drive in about 8 to 15 minutes.

Plans

Novastart is available now in three plans: Free, Pro and Team.

Who it's for

An infinite canvas OS suits anyone whose work spreads across many apps at once: people who keep email, documents, chat and AI tools open all day, teams that want to work in the same windows instead of passing screenshots back and forth, and anyone starting to hand real tasks to AI agents and wanting to see them happen.

The bottom line

An infinite canvas OS treats your workspace as a place rather than a stack of windows. It has room for everything, it stays the way you left it, and you share it with your teammates and your AI agents. Novastart, founded by brothers Thomas and Nick Fraher in Los Angeles, is built around that idea. Learn more and download it at novastart.com.
