As we enter the fifth month of 2023, I reflect on the whirlwind of my current unemployment stint. The journey so far has been filled with highs and lows, coffee-fueled coding sessions, endless cover letters, and more Zoom interviews than I care to admit. I thought it would be cathartic (and perhaps informative) to share my experience and potentially connect with those walking a similar path.
The Interview Marathon
The job hunting journey is never a straight path. In these five months, I've attended countless interviews, four reaching the final stages. Each time I’ve made it to that point, my hopes soared. And each time the pendulum didn't swing in my favor, it stung. But it's crucial to remember, especially in the tech industry, that rejection doesn't necessarily imply inadequacy.
From what I've seen, hiring in tech is a blend of skillset alignment, cultural fit, and, often, timing. Even if you ace the technical questions, there could be many reasons for not securing the position: a sudden change in company priorities, internal shuffles, or someone else just happened to be a slightly better fit for that specific role at that moment. It’s challenging but essential not to take these outcomes personally.
Evolving Skill Set
While I've been hunting for the next big opportunity, I haven't been idle. I've dabbled deeper into Vue and React – sharpening my frontend capabilities. On the backend, I've ventured into the realms of Rust and Go, and let me tell you, it's been an exhilarating ride! These languages offer so much potential, and I'm excited about the diverse projects I could contribute to with this expanded skill set.
For Fellow Job Seekers
For those sailing in the same boat:
- Stay connected. Keep in touch with your peers, attend virtual (or physical) meet-ups, and actively engage in tech communities.
- Keep Learning. While applying for jobs is essential, don’t forget to invest time in expanding your skill set. The tech industry evolves rapidly. What's in demand today might be passé tomorrow.
- Resilience is Key. Rejections are tough. But remember, it only takes one 'yes' to change your career trajectory.

Great post friend! Like so many people over the past year, I was laid off and recently went through the gauntlet myself, so I can certainly empathize with what you're saying.
First, let me commend you on not just sitting around complaining about your situation! When I was on the hiring side of the table, someone's initiative and drive mattered a lot (at least it did to me) and it sounds like you're doing a good job of making strong use of the time you have.
If I may ask, what is your level of experience? Also, what made you choose Rust and Go?
