- TurboFan: The optimizing compiler. While Ignition runs the bytecode, V8's profiler watches for "hot" functions. When a function is called many times, TurboFan takes the bytecode, makes optimistic assumptions about it (e.g., "this variable will always be a number"), and compiles it into highly-optimized machine code.

How does TurboFan make these assumptions? One of its key tricks is Hidden Classes (also called "shapes" or "maps"). In JavaScript, objects can have properties added or removed at any time. This is incredibly slow for an engine to handle.
