GitHub Copilot and Zed don't compete for the same decision most of the time — one is an AI layer bolted onto whatever editor you already run, the other is the editor itself. But enough developers now choose "AI assistant" and "editor" as a single bundled decision that the comparison is worth doing properly, and the two have drifted apart in a way most writeups miss.
The billing model changed under Copilot, not just the price:
- Copilot switched from "premium requests" to AI credits on 1 June 2026 — 1 credit = $0.01 of model usage, billed per token. Pro ($10/mo) includes 1,500 credits, Pro+ ($39/mo) includes 7,000, Max ($100/mo) includes 20,000. Code completion itself stays unlimited on paid plans; it's the model-backed chat/agent usage that now meters against a credit pool instead of a flat request count.
- Pro+ itself rose from $20/mo to $39/mo back on 6 July 2026. Pro held at $10.
- That's two structural changes in four months, on top of the usual model-roster churn (GitHub deprecated six models on 19 October alone). If you priced Copilot out six months ago, the number you remember is wrong twice over.
Zed didn't move at all. Personal stays free, Pro is a flat $10/mo, Business is $30/seat/mo — the same numbers since we started tracking it in July. Zed is also the one of the two that's actually open source (Rust-native, AGPL), and it takes an agent-agnostic approach via ACP rather than shipping one vendor's model as the only option.
What that leaves you with:
- If you're already deep in the GitHub ecosystem — PRs, Actions, Issues — Copilot's integration is still the practical default, credits or not.
- If "AI-assisted coding" and "which editor" are the same open question for you right now, Zed's flat pricing and open-source model are the simpler bet to reason about, and you're not locked into GitHub's model roster or its credit math.
- They run side by side fine. Several engineers on our review team do exactly that: Zed as the daily editor, Copilot's completions wherever GitHub's integration still wins.
