A few years back I built a small website for fun. I wrote a blog about it, lots of people forked it, and a lot of people actually used it to propose their love. I still don't know how those stories ended, but I like to think the website did its job.
Now let me confess something. I never built it because I was a hopeless romantic. It was trending, I needed a project, and "ask her out" sounded fun. And the funniest part? I'm the guy who built a proposal website and never got to use it. A chef who only watches others eat. LOL.
The day I realised people were actually using it
When I wrote the first blog, I thought five people would open it, two would star the repo, and one would say "nice". Instead, forks started showing up. Then I found one from a guy named Far..., who had changed my pages into his own and sent it to someone. Like, for real.
Wait, wait, wait. Someone used my loading page to change their relationship status?
I sat there for a good five minutes. Pride, confusion and a little bit of jealousy, all at once.
Then I looked at my own code again
Ugh. I should not have.
The site was not responsive. I had literally written "please don't send this to mobile users" in my own blog. Think about it. You build a thing to send to a person, and then tell people not to open it on the one device that person uses 24x7.
I ignored it for a long time. Then one of my connections asked me to finally fix it, and that was it. No more running. I opened the project and decided to rebuild it properly.
One serious thing
If she says no and means it, respect it. The website can be persistent. You shouldn't be.
Want to use it?
Clone it, run it with Live Server, and please change my name in the footer. Every page says "Made by RS", and I don't want anyone explaining who RS is on a first date. (say a word and i will remove it)
git clone https://github.com/RS-labhub/ask-her-out.git
cd ask-her-out
You can try the live version at ask-her-out.rohansrma.me and the code is on GitHub (https://github.com/RS-labhub/ask-her-out).
If you want to see where it all started, my first post is still up, emojis and all.
If you make your own version, drop the link in the comments. I'd love to see it. And if it works out, I'd love to hear that too, because clearly someone has to.
Have you ever sent a website instead of saying it to their face? Be honest. I never did any of them.
