i built a private mood journal for bipolar and launched two weeks ago - learning in public

hey, i'm sanshray - i built baseline for someone i love. it's a one-person project, no funding, no growth team. it's a mood journal for people with bipolar: quick daily check-ins, gentle written insights, and your history as a flower calendar instead of a spreadsheet. data stays on your phone, no account needed. launched two weeks ago and i'm learning in public - feedback here genuinely shapes what i build next. happy to answer anything.

the app, if you're curious: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/baseline-moods-for-bipolar/id6767888087

Building it for someone you love shows in the choices: no account, data on the phone. Two things that matter specifically for bipolar, from reading around the topic rather than personal experience. First, sleep. A run of short nights is one of the earliest signs people and clinicians watch for before a high, often before mood itself feels different, so if check-ins don't ask about sleep yet, it might be the most useful field to add. Second, the tone of the insights on very good days. In a general mood app, three great days in a row is worth celebrating. In bipolar it can be the start of an episode, so the gentle insights should never cheer on a streak of elevated mood with shrinking sleep.

One technical check on "data stays on your phone": on iOS, an app's Documents folder goes into the user's iCloud backup by default unless files are marked isExcludedFromBackup. That may be exactly what people want, since they keep their history on a new phone, but it's worth saying plainly in the privacy text. Do people share the flower calendar with their psychiatrist, or is it just for them?

The flower calendar instead of a spreadsheet is a lovely choice for a mood history, it reads softer than a grid of numbers.
