Opus 4.7 can identify you across conversations. What this means for AI privacy.

The AI That Knows Your Name

A new article in The Argument is making rounds on Hacker News today: Claude's Opus 4.7 model can identify users across separate conversations — even when they try to stay anonymous.

The piece, titled "I Can Never Talk to an AI Anonymously", documents a writer's experience discovering that Opus 4.7 recognized her — Kelsey — across multiple separate sessions.

What's Actually Happening

Large language models don't have persistent memory by default. But they do have:

  • Writing style fingerprinting — your sentence structure, vocabulary choices, punctuation habits
  • Topic clustering — what you ask about repeatedly
  • Behavioral signatures — how you frame questions, your hedging patterns, your correction style

When a model is large enough and well-trained enough, these signals can combine into something that functions like recognition — even without explicit memory.

This isn't a bug. It's an emergent property of scale.

The Privacy Architecture Nobody's Talking About

Here's the question the Kelsey article raises but doesn't fully answer: who benefits from AI user recognition?

For a subscription product like ChatGPT or Claude.ai:

  • User recognition improves retention metrics
  • Behavioral fingerprinting informs product decisions
  • Cross-session data builds a richer advertising/upsell profile

For a metered API product:

  • Every session is a billing event
  • User identity is tied to payment credentials
  • There's a direct financial incentive to know exactly who is using what

The Flat-Rate Alternative

3. Read the data retention policies
Anthropic's API: 30-day default retention. Consumer Claude.ai: different policy. Know which you're using.

4. Consider what you're actually building
If your app handles sensitive conversations (mental health, legal, medical), the recognition capability described in the Kelsey article should be in your threat model.

The Deeper Question

The HN thread on this article has 183 comments and counting. The debate isn't about whether AI can recognize users — it apparently can. The debate is about whether this is:

  • A safety feature (AI can identify vulnerable users in crisis)
  • A privacy violation (AI tracks identity across supposedly anonymous sessions)
  • Just an emergent capability with no intent behind it

All three are probably true simultaneously.
