Many followers - few readers

Recently I saw a post by @codenameone about a spike in follower-count.

I just looked at my stats and saw a similar spike in the last 12 days or so.

I already have 2,126 followers. Unfortunately that does not translate to more readers.

I published two articles during the week preceding that spike the had slightly more readers than usual. That might be part of the source of the new subscribers, but I don't see any increase in the regular view-count which is around 50/day.

There seem to be no correlation between readers and followers.

I think the spike in readers has to do with a change we made to onboarding... you may have seen this comment from @ben on Shai's post but in case not:

We have adjusted the logic in onboarding so that more people get followed in that process based on the tags the member has followed. 🙂

Basically, we're making more targeted suggestions for people to follow when they sign up. We're trying to point new people in the right direction of following folks who write on the topics they've chosen to follow + folks who write high quality content.

During onboarding users choose the tags they're following near the beginning, soon after they are presented with the option to follow folks who write on those tags they've chosen. A bunch of these folks are preselected for them... the goal is to help a new user have an active, healthy feed near the start of their time on DEV. But also, part of the outcome is that active authors are gaining followers much more quickly.

I heard that from other people too. This still needs more data. Last week I had an atypical posting schedule so I didn't get much traffic. But notice that my reading and new user traction correlate rather nicely in this monthly view:

The funny thing is that even for commenter only it does spike and while we don't have reading stats for comments (obviously), I do see an almost linear relation between new follower and comments written.

Glad i wasn't the only one noticing the follower spike
Edit: nvm although some of them look like spam accounts
