If your iOS app lets people create, generate or share images, the App Review Guidelines Apple updated on October 16, 2026 are worth a careful read.

Prevention, not just takedowns. Apps that handle user-created or generated content are now expected to stop non-consensual intimate imagery, including AI deepfakes, from being produced and to remove it, not merely react once it has spread. If a developer lacks adequate safeguards or doesn't fix a violation after being notified, Apple may treat that as a breach of the Developer Code of Conduct.

No hidden features. The new Section 2.5.19 bans hidden, dormant or undocumented functionality. The target is the "bait-and-switch" app that shows reviewers one purpose and unlocks something harmful after approval, with "nudify" features as the example Apple gives. Hiding capabilities, for example by obfuscating code, can get the app pulled and the developer account terminated.

Alternative distribution is covered too. Apps that facilitate human trafficking or child exploitation will be removed from the App Store and blocked from alternative distribution channels.

What's still unclear: how Apple will judge whether safeguards are "sufficient", and what deadlines it will give developers in individual cases.

Practical takeaways if you ship generative or UGC features:

  • Make sure everything your app can do is visible and documented at review time.
  • Put moderation and reporting flows in place before launch, not after the first complaint.
  • Keep a clear process for acting quickly on Apple's notices.
