Hi everyone!

Welcome to the dev.to-community!

I'm Martin, I was a Senior Front End Architect / Manager at one of the world's largest interactive agencies, leading Front End Teams for international accounts. In 2018 I quit and now I'm traveling the world as a professional scuba diver and fully remote Senior Front End Architect / Front End Tech Lead for various international clients.

On dev.to I write mostly about modern Front End Development with react.js and next.js, other topics are design and pure code. I love handcrafted CSS, HTML, and JavaScript. However, a proper framework or library is essential for modern Front End Development.

Currently, I'm publishing the weekly "WebDevDigest: A curated list of the top five web development must-reads from last week" and a library of JavaScript functions in 1 line of code which you can also find on npmjs: onelinecode and GitHub: onelinecode.

If I have enough time, I write more in-depth articles about next.js + TypeScript, for example how to create multi-language pages with next export which is on GitHub:next-export-i18n and npmjs: next-export-i18n

I recommend following the general tags webdev, vscode , career and productivity and javascript, react, CSS. Head over to your Dashboard and adjust the tag weight for to personalize your home feed.

Here's a list of articles to start your journey as an successful developer and a great writer:

If you are looking for your next job, I highly recommend to buy the Book De-Coding the Technical Interview Process by Emma Bostian. It is hands down the best preparation for every technical interview.

If you're interested in my articles, follow me on dev.to/martinkr or twitter.com/_martinkr.

In case you have questions or want to get in touch, feel free to contact me on dev.to/martinkr.

And don't forget to start posting today!

Cheers!

Hello everyone!

I'm Ritik Bharti from INDIA learning web dev from last 2 months.
Recently I came across a Blog post in which "Learn in Public" was mentioned so, I decided to implement that from today that's why I created my account on DEV Community and looking forward for learning in public.

One more thing is that I'm an introvert type of person having lack of self confidence in speaking or posting or writing something publicly, I always think too much before posting or speaking or writing something publicly which I want to improve in myself.

Hi all, I’m Casey from Perth, Western Australia. I’ve just changed careers to software engineering, starting a new job in a couple of weeks. I’ve learned a lot about motivation and mindset principles so please let me know if you need any tips!

I'll take some tips. I'm switching careers to SW development as well. Currently in a boot camp. I'm all ears. Both literally (I have big ones) and figuratively. :-)

Hi Brady, nice to meet you 🙂 Can I ask what career you are transitioning from? I've come from an admin background, and before that I was a musician/composer.

For beginner mindset tips, I recommend Shawn Wang's Coding Career. It's full of good advice and resources, and helps you develop your core values as a developer.

Some highlights on being a Junior Developer:

  • Your job is to ask questions. "Not knowing anything" is an asset. As a junior dev, you're fresh - with no pre-conceived ideas or bad habits (yet). Your employer should know this and use your "newness" to mold you into their ideal worker.
  • Try to ask good questions - here's a big breakdown that's worth reading. Before asking a question, try out a few things first and tell them what you already tried - teachers appreciate that.
  • Good communication skills are critical for a developer of any level. I recently listened to a podcast where a senior dev described most workdays as 60% communicating with people, so it can't be ignored!
  • Learning In Public - This is a big one. Take the things you've learned and share them in your own words. In fact, that's what I'm doing with you right now! Help people with their problems. Champion their good ideas. It builds your network and solidifies your own learning.

NOTE: It can be hard to give advice when you yourself are new. The trick is to write to yourself three months ago. What advice did you need to hear?

Motivation is another story, because what motivates you is unique and personal. I did this free quiz, which gave me my top 3 motivations (Be Unique, Organise, Improve). Knowing these gives me a better grasp on my strengths and weaknesses, so it's a great place to start. If you do do it, I'd love to know what you get🙂

Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Such a thorough reply with useful tips inside and links to resources outside. I am grateful you took the time to reply in such a way. You're right in that I'm a sponge right now. I will be visiting all resources and gleaning what I can.

I worked alongside my father in an underground-sprinkler installation and service business he has. I started when I was 13 and am now 34. It's time for something new.

Again, thank you and have a good day, Casey.

Hey Mike! Yeah policies are well documented, but if I had a recommendation to make it'd be to handle authorisation in form request objects (also used for validation) instead of controllers. This way you keep your controller methods clean and lean

Hello everyone.

I am a teacher and newfound lover of coding languages. I teach students the basics of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript using the code.org curriculum. As I teach, I realize more of my passion for creating because coding lets you immediately see your work. I have always been good at analyzing and auditing with super attention to detail which makes coding and debugging a little easier and extremely rewarding.

I'm hopeful to be accepted to a 4-month intensive coding program. If not, I look to pursue my masters in software development.

I started on computers at 6yrs old in 1989 on a 386x processor running MS-DOS lol. while that did help me a lot with command line things like terminal and such, i'm having a great time learning the languages that will help me in the future, in order to be the provider i need to be for my wife and 3yr old daughter.

Hi folks!
My name is Mike, I'm from S.E. Texas! Such a bunch of nice guys and ladies here! It seems like everyone is willing to help their fellow developers out! So my main focus is now PHP, Laravel, JS, CSS, PostgreSQL, and MySQL. I've written Java stuff (six years ago was the last native Android phone app I create), wrote some significant VBA stuff, and even further back - I wrote a few applications for scientific (lab) data analysis. While there are many subject matter experts here, I would NOT classify myself as one of them 😂. I do pretty well - and if I don't know an answer - there is always here (DEV), and of course Stack Overflow.
My current project has given me some artistic freedom and I am now exploring Laravel 8.x policies. I've looked at gates - but I think for as big as this application will be - that policies will be a better option. Even though Laravel has done an excellent job at documenting policies - I was wondering if anyone here has implemented them yet. If so - can you give me any suggestions?
So glad to meet all of you!
Mike

Happy Saturday DEVs!

Just joined and looking to partake in discussions on all things new tech, start-ups, and Blockchain. I've just started my journey into Blockchain this year and excited to learn while making new connections. Currently based out of Canada, have a wife and 2 kids and I just turned 40 last year. Grew up in a household involved in 90s PC gaming industry. My father founded Amtex Software. I have been attempting to be an entrepreneur since 2005. Created and launched a board game called Antarctica Global WARming in 2006. Had some success. Got into app and website development and launched a few successful products while building a bit of a passive income base. Recently attempted to launch a training program for cleanliness standards and short-term rentals but did not work out. Looking to sharpen my skills in Blockchain to future proof my income. I've learned a lot from failure but hoping 2022 will be my year.
