Logging Like a Jedi: Spotting Problems Before Users Do

The problem isn’t that we lack data—it’s that our logs are noisy, unstructured, and scattered like loose change in a couch cushion.   • Every log line is JSON, making it trivial to ship to Elasticsearch, Loki, or any log‑aggregation tool.
  • The reqId (generated by express-pino-logger) lets you grep for a single request across all services.
  • We’re using proper levels: info for flow, debug for low‑volume details, warn for things worth watching, error for anything that breaks the user experience.
  • No accidental leaking of secrets—just the fields we deliberately include.

Common Traps to Avoid

The correlation ID is the part people skip and then pay for. My setup is a relay with several agents hammering it concurrently, and without a request ID attached to each call the logs are a pile of true statements about the wrong request.
One thing that saved me: log the identifier even on the boring successful path, not just on errors. Half the time the mystery is why a request that succeeded took nine seconds, and a log that only writes on failure has nothing to say about it.
