Your Store Gets Add to Carts and No Orders Find the Step Where the Funnel Leaks

帖子

A Shopify owner posted: 8,000 sessions, 109 add to cart, 51 checkouts, 8 orders. He thought shipping was free.

Top reply: "The $75 shipping price. That's why."

Before you touch your ads, find which step leaks. Here's how I'd check each one.

Traffic, add-to-carts, no orders: find the step where your store leaks

A store owner on r/shopify posted his numbers in September: 8,000 sessions, 109 add to cart, 51 reached checkout, 8 orders. He believed shipping to the EU and US was free. The top reply was one line: "The $75 shipping price. That's why." Another said they couldn't tell from the page if they'd get a model or a photo.

Two leaks, two different steps, neither one about the ads. A store that "doesn't convert" is almost always losing people at one or two specific steps. Find the step first.

Get three numbers

Shopify Analytics splits sessions into four steps: sessions, added to cart, reached checkout, completed checkout. Take the last 30 days and work out:

  1. Product page to cart
  2. Cart to checkout
  3. Checkout to order

Compare each to your own good months, not to an industry average you found on a vendor's blog. And if a step drops to zero overnight, check it isn't broken before redesigning anything. Another owner posted 122 carts, 13 checkouts, 0 orders in a week; the first replies said "place a test order on mobile."

Watch real sessions

Install a recorder (Microsoft Clarity is free), wait a week, and watch 20 sessions that added to cart and didn't buy. Then buy something from your own store on your phone as a new customer, from each country you sell to. The owner who thought shipping was free couldn't see the $75 from his own browser.

Step 1 leaks: they can't tell what arrives

Show size next to a hand, a mug, a doorway. Show everything in the box. Put a short video of the real product in the media gallery. And don't over-polish: one DTC owner said a $12,347 studio shoot converted at 2.7% against 3.2% for iPhone-on-a-white-wall photos. One store's report, not a rule, but their reason makes sense: the polished shots looked like ads.

If your discount popup fires in the first few seconds, it covers the product before anyone has seen it. Delay it.

Step 2 leaks: surprise costs

Baymard's checkout research puts "extra costs too high (shipping, tax, fees)" first, at 40% of shoppers who abandoned for a reason other than browsing.

Show shipping (or "free shipping") on the product page. Show how far the cart is from your free-shipping threshold. Check that your cart drawer upsells aren't pushing the checkout button off a phone screen.

Step 3 leaks: trust and payment

In the same list: not trusting the site with a card 19%, slow delivery 20%, returns policy 13%, card declined 10%, not enough payment methods 9%.

Make the returns policy plain and easy to find. Give a real email. Say who runs the store. Show real reviews, even if there are only a few. Don't fake them; the FTC's rule on fake reviews has been in force since October 2024. Open your checkout on an iPhone and an Android and see which express buttons actually show up. Check your payment provider's dashboard for declines. Put the delivery time next to the buy button.

Testing the fix on a small store

You probably can't A/B test checkout. So change one thing at the leakiest step, write down the date and the 30-day before number, keep the traffic the same, and wait two to four weeks. Watch that step, not just overall conversion.

Do this tonight

Pull the 30-day funnel, work out the three rates, and place one test order on your phone. That usually points at one step.

If it's step 1 and your product pages are all still photos, a short product video is the cheapest thing to try. AutoWhisper makes one from the product photos you already have: 52 credits for a full video, 65 free credits for new accounts.
