🌐 Static vs. Dynamic IP: Fixed vs. Temporary Addresses
Do IP addresses stay the same forever, or do they change every time you connect? That depends on whether you are using a Static or Dynamic IP.
Here are the key points:
🔹 1. Static IP (Permanent Address)
Manually assigned and fixed; it never changes regardless of reboots.
Used for web servers, game servers, CCTV cameras, and remote enterprise infrastructure so clients can always find them at the exact same address.
🔹 2. Dynamic IP (Temporary Address)
Automatically assigned and changes periodically.
Managed by DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol), which leases out available IP addresses temporarily to devices as they connect.
Used for everyday consumer devices (smartphones, laptops, home Wi-Fi) to efficiently recycle limited IP addresses.
🔹 3. Why Use Dynamic IPs?
Address Conservation: Prevents rapid IP exhaustion by reusing addresses among offline devices.
Plug-and-Play Convenience: Requires zero manual configuration by the user.
🚀 Think of a Static IP as a permanent, owned house address, while a Dynamic IP is like being assigned a temporary hotel room number every time you check in!

Good beginner explainer. A related point people often ask about: because dynamic IPs get reassigned, IP-based location is always an estimate, usually reliable at country and city level, not street level. The ISP and ASN stay much more stable than the exact address. You can see what a geolocation lookup returns for an IP here: ipgeolocation.io/documentation/ip-location-api.html
